I have a geo-site which is ranking #11 on my pc (running Vista) and an imac (running Leopard). On a mini-mac running Snow Leopard, the same Google search (same keywords, everything) shows me at #2. WTF??

When I search the "Latest," "24 hours," "Past week," etc. rankings, the results are pretty much the same throughout all three machines. Why are the standard ("Anytime") results so different between them?

I'm using FireFox on all three units and they're all the same isp.

Thanks for any thoughts.

are you logged into google (gmail account) when searching on any of the comps?

If you've enabled web history for your google account it'll remember your searches and display the sites that you visit higher on the page.

No. I'm not logged onto to gmail for the mini-mac, although I am for the imac (!??!) What you suggested made 100% sense, though, and thanks.

I updated my post, wrote it wrong the first time :P Basically, google personalizes your searches so you don't get the true google searches.

You can use sites like http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm to get the true rankings for a keyword.

Each search request can go to a different google data center and these are generally out of sync for some results.

There are ways, however, that you can opt out of personalized search to find your true ranking:

1. To do so through Google itself, visit http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=54048 for step-by-step directions.
2. Turn on Private Browsing in your browser.
3. Remove any Google cookies from your computer.
4. Disable personalized search in Firefox and Internet Explorer with this plug-in from yoast.com: http://yoast.com/tools/seo/disable-personalized-search-plugin
5. Use Google Chrome’s incognito browsing mode: http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95464
