Difference between second and third level domains?

Following on from a question that was asked in another thread - how many different types of domain are there - I am now wondering if anyone can explain this (probably very basic) point to a newbie domainer: what exactly is the difference between second and third level domains? Sorry if this is a silly question but as I said, I'm very new to all this
