So I was thinking that ... because namepros is a platform for (among other things) learning, why not create a post in the break room where interesting "off-topic" facts can be shared.

Updated Rules for Posting:
1. Although non-domain related facts are preferred, any topic (size, shape and form) is welcome.
2. Keep it PG please (non-adult).
3. Sufficient research with a decent amount of information is required (no one-liners).
4. Include images if possible.
5. Reference URL links of resources (where possible).
6. Engage by posting or liking/disliking/thanking. Refrain from commenting (unless it's relevant) to avoid clutter.
7. No research is perfect, so challenging counter-posts or adding facts (within the rules) are encouraged.

To make it more interesting, users may post a variation of the truth (perhaps even adding humor to it) by obscuring the facts a little. An example: "did you know that bananas are green when picked and exported, and are actually grown in square shapes as well". This offset can be used as an encouragement for readers to do further research on the subject.

Knowledge is power, so start flexing what you got. Enjoy! :xf.smile:.

Did You Know : Lady Liberty was built in France

statue-of-liberty.jpg

In 1865 Edouard de Laboulaye (a Frenchman) proposed that a statue representing liberty be built for the US, honoring it's independence and friendship with France.

The entire concept took around 21 years to materialize. Following the idea in 1865, the design work started in 1870 and it's construction in 1876. Her Lady's arm holding the torch was completed that same year, followed by the head-and-shoulders in 1878, and the complete assembly in 1884.

The construction of the pedestal (the base) was concurrently started in the US in 1884. After it's first unveiling in Paris France on the 4th of July 1884, it was disassembled and shipped to the US by naval ship. After arriving almost a year later in NY in 1885, the entire structure was reassembled on the pedestal at Bedloe's Island in 1886. The delay in it's reassembly was due to the pedestal's construction being incomplete.

Standing 305 feet tall (almost 10 kilometers high), she is made up of a copper exterior (a thickness 2 American pennies placed together), with the interior made up of cast iron and stainless steel. The torch is said to be covered in gold leaf (hence the lit-effect), while the rest of her appears green due to the natural oxidizing effect that nature's elements have on copper.

Unveiled on October 28th in the year 1886, some 1 million New Yorker's celebrated the masterpiece in wet and foggy weather. Today, around 131 years later, the Statue of Liberty is a national monument and New York landmark known the world over. It is believed to receive approximately four million people visiting each year.

Did You Know : The world's most eligible bachelor is a 43 year old Kenyan, named Sudan.

As you may already be aware, the popular dating app Tinder is well known for hosting millions of profiles belonging to hopefuls longing for some form of recognition. Meet Sudan, a northern white rhino using Tinder to raise $9mm in funds for research desperately needed to save his species from extinction.

In a dual effort to raise money and awareness, the funding is aimed at finding solutions such as in-vitro, among other breeding methods. Sudan with his two female companions (the last of their kind) are unable to breed naturally because of challenges such as old age.

The wildlife experts of the Kenyan wildlife Ol Pejeta Conservancy setup Sudan's Tinder profile intro, saying "I don't mean to be too forward, but the fate of my species literally depends on me. I perform, well under pressure". Their own website had crashed by Tuesday evening because of the overwhelming traffic it is receiving.

Guarded under 24/7 heavily armed protection, Sudan and his female companions (Najin and Fatu) reside at the conservancy. It's CEO, Richard Vigne, says "The plight that currently faces the northern white rhinos is a signal to the impact that humankind is having on many thousands of other species across the planet. Ultimately, the aim will be to reintroduce a viable population of northern white rhino back into the wild, which is where their true value will be realized.".

Head of communications and marketing at Tinder, Matt David, says "We partnered with Ol Pejeta Conservancy to give the most eligible bachelor in the world a chance to meet his match. We are optimistic given Sudan's profile will be seen on Tinder in 190 countries and in over 40 languages".

Rhino poaching is of great concern and is currently at a level of crisis. A National Geographic web-article wrote: "The South African Supreme Court of Appeal has recently legalized rhino horn trade in South Africa (again), rejecting an appeal by the government to keep a ban on domestic trade in place. The decision opens a door to criminal activity that some say is necessary to save a species—and others say will doom it.".
