Did I screw myself?

I did something stupid. I purchased some domains that auto renewed themselves. Now the domains are locked since I did not pay them and it has gone to collections.

I am stupid I know, lazy and really stupid.

But I want to get them back now. The registrar is 1and1 (yes I am super-duper dumb). Has anyone had any experience with unlocking domains after an account has already gone to collections?

I am quite uncertain of my next move, especially considering the registrar.

Any help is extremely appreciated.

Yes. You are really, really dumb using 1and1 as your registrar. I'd contact support and tell them how it is. You want to renew the domains, and ask them how to go about doing that.

If you get them renewed, then wait 45 days before you transfer them out, else you will pay for a transfer which won't be added to your expiry date, and the responsibility of a refund falls on 1and1, not your new registrar.

Afaik, 1and1 usually drop the domains after 30 days after expiry. So you could re-register them at another Registrar when they drop.
