Developing with country extension

I was wondering, if you're planning on developing a website but it's in a competetive field (e.g. hosting) where all the good .com's are pretty much taken, can it be a good idea to instead use the keyword with a less popular country extension? I am planning on developing a domaining site which I believe has an original idea but pretty much all the decent domains are taken. I am starting to lean towards registering and developing something like a .sh, .io, .nu, etc domain but am not sure. What do you guys think, does anybody have experiences trying to run a site with a bad extension?

It's not a good idea. You won't get any type-in traffic. You could take a look at www.tdnam.com to see if you could purchase a reasonable domain name at a reasonable cost.

I personally would never develop on a ccTLD, but I wouldn't fault anyone for doing it, especially on a high quality 1-word ccTLD vs. a bad 3-word .com. If I didn't have good .com domain related domain names, I'd probably develop on my Domains.sh or Domains.tc sooner than I'd register a name to develop on.

Hmm yeah I kind of figured. What about something like a .org, does the amount of visitor traffic that would type .com by accident make a serious impact?
