I was reading some of the threads in the appraisal section, and in many of them people are saying.. developed the domain is worth more.. and.. developed it is maybe mid xxx.. and that kind of appraisals..

But when is it developed good? when it has 500 unique visitors??? or when it has 5,000 uniques?? 50,000 ?? or what..

I think saying.. with development its worth more is a bit lame.. nobody is waiting for that kind of replys.. or am I missing a point here??

post your suggestions if you feel the same way as I do, or if you don't :hehe:

Fair point. There are degrees of development, and any domain would be worth a million if it were sufficiently developed. You're right; more clarity is needed.

it would be a bit difficult to evaluate a developed domain before it has been developed. all comments that point towards a higher value if developed mean that this domain would most likely yield a higher evaluation if work, time and positioning would be put into it. This being said, the developed $xxx means that this is the minimum anyone is willing to state. Should the domain be developed right, advertised correctly and positioned well enough to gain market share, then logically, anything is possible.
example: godaddy or even namepros. both sites could have been something entirely different just judging by their name.
so, when someone states:
undeveloped = $xx
but, developed: $xxx
we simply mean that this is our base, minimum evaluation.

it would be a bit much to say developed as such and such, we are evaluating the domain name, and are not in the process of writing a dev. plan or business concept.
if this is what the poster wants, this sure wouldn't come for free. a professionally developed DN/website and business concept are (sometimes) on the pricey side.

:imho:

While reading this a thought struck me.
What about instead of $xx or $xxx developed say it something like:
$xx-$xxx undeveloped with <excellent,good or fair> development potential which could add to the value.

The idea is to communicate that proper development, SEO and all that other stuff could add a small or large amount to the value.

JUST MHO

An old mentor of mine had a great saying "You'll only get something out of what you put into it."

Put a little into get a little back, put a lot into get a lot back and pour your heart, soul and energy into it and your possibilites are endless.

I am one of those people who is guilty of saying "with development $xxx" and so fourth because lets face it would you pay someone for just a shell of Rolex watch at retail value?

Don't most of us just want to know the value of the domain in it's current state? :)

the current state would the one without development.

Some domains are undeveloped and carry pagerank, which changes the status completely IMO.

Domain = Land.
Developed Domain = Land with something built on it. It will almost always be worth more. Build something pointless though and you will be wasting your time and won't be adding much value.

Agree :)

It all depends on how much :$: your developed domain is bringing in.

If you have some random domain like 2ba2ca2.com it has no resale value as a domain-only ... but if you develop it and it makes you $100 a day, then the value goes to about $40K maybe.

Almost every domain will increase in value if developed. If they are done right and traffic and $$ increases, the price will skyrocket. It can take alot of time and hard work but it is normally well worth it!

I've seen alot of names that were regfee, but you can still see a potential for development. But if you just come out and say "regfee", it may be a bit discouraging and dissuade them from developing a domain that does have potential. So I think letting them know that the real value lies in the development is not necessarily a bad thing. Some domains are valuable by themselves, some are not. For example... I own trademark-lawyers.org, which I myself would value at regfee for the domain alone, but I registered it because it has development potential, keyword value, and half decent click through payouts... If I ever get around to developing it and promoting it, I may make some money off of it, which will raise its value considerably :)

The bottom line is, when you are apprasing the value of a domain name, that is all you should appraise. Any name holds more value developed properly so whats the point of mentioning it?

Yup good point. I also try and drop in a few ideas or at least directions for development.

Developed sites are the ones they make money direct ($$$ every day) or indirect (good pagerank, backlinks, uniques that will be good for ads) so they are all summed under one rule ... money

When you get a name you value only the name
The value of the website when it's developed can't be determined before you see the real facts.

So bottomline any name can be good if it will be developed, especially if it's targetted to a nice niche/market
