I could counter with "How many ebays does the world need?"

I agree, why give ebay the credit....create a paypal eCommerce button and paste the code where you have the "buy it now" link...it's easy to do. You obviously have the product, because your selling it on ebay. You can have an ebay store and an eCommerce website.

Enjoy,

Eric

You can say it looks good to till the cows come home, but why would google want to rank well a site that just offers ebay affiliate links and adsense. The utility of the site is near zero. Why express nicities about development that is rubbish and will likely result in no or near no revenue? Who does that help?

A high Goog rank for a product site will not necesscarily translate into sales because users are likely to use Goog's product "Shopping" feature... which leads them to buy direct from the OEMs. This in turn drives OEM's to advertise with Goog.

The view that "ebay affiliate links and adsense" on domainer product sites is what kills their chance of getting a high SERP is a red herring... that went bad a year ago when the G shopping cow came home.

How else does the owner of a site like that hope to make money other than via the slim chance of getting free google traffic?

Domainer product sites can...
--join adwords to keyword-promote their sites on contextual Goog shopping pages.

--Use social network site marketing -like FB fan pages (sunglasses would be popular because folks like to show-off how cool they look in their shades. And the 'celebrity' shades angle would work well).

--Seek out vertical market site link exchanges (tons of fashion sites)
-add an affilate network angle

--Use free advertising sites like Craigslist.
--Seek out direct advertisng clients
and so forth...

Its clear you like to piss on people and tell them its raining. Please consider that often times your merely pissing in the wind and wondering why your 'all wet'.

Aah the excuses...traffic is the very foundation of success on online. Without that a site is nothing, doesn't matter how good it looks, it might as well not exist. This is one of those sites that might as well not exist, join the other billion people who have created some lousy site with affiliate links and are hoping that will become a business. Success takes real effort/thought, not just slapping some template site together in an hour and hoping it works.

Have you actually tried any of this with a site that is just a few ebay links and some adwords ads? If so give me some examples of success with it.

The site just links to other people's ebay listings.

Other people's?

Yes. Hence why I asked "How many ebay's do we need"?

I actually clicked on one of these and ended up looking at fountain pens on ebay. I have a fountain pen fetish that I have so far prevented from invading my life.

Next domain I sell for $1500 the Kafka Mont Blanc will be mine!

1). I was not giving excuses but talking about alternative methods of driving traffic, and hopefully sales.

2). I am not an expert on ebay or affiliate marketing, having used ebay just a few times and briefly experimented with a travel affiliate program about three years ago. And I can't speak as to what affiliate program the owner of sunglasses.tv is using.

What I thought I was looking at when I visited the site, and clicked a link, was the Ebay Partner Network. From what I understand they pay affiliates for driving traffic to ebay. So it does not have to be his ebay store, or even the same products featured on the site.

Here are some successful examples of "some lousy site with [ebay] affiliate links that are hoping that will become a business":

Earthlink
Q & A with Shannon Lisecki, Senior Strategic Partner Manager of EarthLink

Q: How did you get started in affiliate marketing?
A: EarthLink’s first foray into affiliate marketing was with eBay via CJ and Amazon.com Associates program. We later expanded our use of affiliate marketing to include additional advertisers on CJ and other affiliate networks. We continue to use affiliate marketing selectively on our site. ...

We use eBay’s API and XML feed to pull in listings on our web search result pages and our deals page (deals.earthlink.net).... I am always looking for interesting content or popular products that I can promote.

Q: What percent of your overall commissions earned does eBay Partner Network represent?
A: Well, if I told you this, I would have to kill you. In all seriousness, we do not disclose that level of financial detail. However, suffice to say, eBay Partner Network (ePN) is a valuable and significant part of our advertising and partnership revenue stream. I see our ePN relationship continuing for a long time. ...

"Trainz.com sells inventory on its own website as well as on eBay, conducting about 4,000 total transactions per month. In early 2007, Trainz.com became a member of the eBay Partner Network so that it could be paid for the visitors it was driving to eBay, whether a visitor bought a Trainz.com product or not. Since then, the company has seen an increase in revenues as a result.

The combination of its multi-channel sales strategy and eBay Partner Network participation has helped Trainz.com continue to grow steadily every year. The company recently won a Professional eBay Sellers’ Alliance (PeSA) contest for driving the most traffic to eBay, outpacing its competition by 2-3X!" --

Note: sunglasses.tv may be using a script, like the one below, that turns ebay links into affiliate links.
eBay Affiliate Links - Modules - GentleSource PHP Scripts
"The module converts normal eBay URLs into affiliate URLs by extracting the eBay article ID from the URL and building the affiliate URL together with some other parameter."

As a TV site though this (free) script may have been a better way to go as it incorporates the YouTube API and the Amazon API, then auto generates the page... in 5 minutes, so, again, snoop you shouldn't say stuff like "you can't just slap some template site together in an hour and hope it works." Because, in truth... YOU CAN!!!

HowTo: Youtube, Ebay, Amazon, Mashup Affiliate Site
YouTube - HowTo: Youtube Ebay Amazon Mashup Affiliate Site

Thanks for the challenge. I learned a bit and shared with the group. Which reveals another truth; instigators can be valuable members of a group. But still... you don't have to "crap" on people.

Thanks everyone for comments and also for criticism.
I think that EPN sites as Youtube related site are good if they provide something that helps the user, I explain.
If a beginner user goes to ebay it can be difficult even to find where the sunglasses category is, if then he wants to research for brand it's even worse.
I agree that a site with only ebay links is not useful but organizing it in categories, with logos etc. can be helpful.
Same for Video sites. Yesterday a friend of mine was searching the video of a gol from the soccer game Inter - Juventus on Youtube and he couldn't find it. I took the mouse and it takes about 5 seconds for me to find it.
If he could have gone to a site where there are only soccer videos, organized for team and match he would have seen the gol without my help.
Same applies for directories. What add dmoz.org to the web? It has no unique content...

P.s. I'm not saying that my site is fantastic or stuff like that, I manage some financial websites (in italian) that are 10 times better because are full of original content, it's only I don't think a site like this it's 100% useless.

I appreciate your avant garde views as they most certainly apply for the extension and are in step with the newer direction that the internet appears taking.

There isn't much point giving examples of content and ecommernce sites that use affiliate links/adsense to help monetize the traffic. This is a site with no traffic, it offers nothing other than advertising. It just isn't likely to work as a business model. It is like putting up a billboard in an area nobody travels to.

Just to keep you updated..
The site is receiving about 15/20 visits/day from google and did some $ with EPN.
We added 2 sections (very small at the moment) with images of celebrities with sunglasses and videos about sunglasses.
Considering that we're dedicating it 5% of our time it's not bad.
Let's go .TV

Hey,
Congrats Donnie.

Any forward momentum is much better than none.
You are an inspiration. I have been reading threads such as these lately and have been inspired towards trying to build a few sites with some of my own .TV's.

So, no matter how you do it, or no matter what the outcome, I really dont care because it is threads such as these that are the backbone of our .TV future.

I do appreciate all of the input from everyone here on the ideas of best monetizing, so even the criticism IS helpful.

Nice Job Donnie.
Vito.

BRAVO, donnied79!

...and many thanks for sharing your experience. I see that as an inspiration to us all and the fact that you are relating your stats to us, even at this early stage, is nothing less than amazing. It only proves my point and makes it abundantly clear that the extension ROCKS!

.tv - I Like It

...and you are just one reason why it is growing and just not stopping or going away!!!

Thanks Vito,
the only thing I can suggest you for personal experience is never give up.
Our best site in terms of earnings first 3 months hardly did 1/2 visits a day. We keep trying until we started to see an increase in terms of visits and consequently money. And we're still working on it every day to maximize the earnings.
Unfortunately we are not english native speakers so it's a lot easier to develop italian websites...

Edit: thanks to Freedom too...
