I want to get into making my own backgrounds and logos, but I am having some trouble. I currently use Gimp, but I am sure if it can do what I want.

I was wondering what Software is the best. Probably Photoshop, but I am poor and would prefer something free or close to free.

Gimp is perfect if you are broke and looking for something free. It very closely resembles Photoshop. Gimp and Photoshop are very powerful and can do way more in terms of graphical design than you could probably muster. Stick with Gimp!

I agree. Paintshop pro is another option though, if you have a little cash handy. I believe its owned by Corell now, used to be Jasc.

I am getting used to GIMP, going through the tutorials, and learning some really cool things. I guess I just need to buckle down and read the tutorials so I could better understand all the built in options.

One of my friends uses photofiltre (it's free and available in many languages). I've used Gimp before and it kept crashing. Whoever said it was "free photoshop" was lying, lol.

There is no alternate of Photoshop and you should go for it. You can take guidance from online tutorials because those are the simple way to learn anything. In between you can even seek some video tutorials. If you are good at GIMP then should be nothing difficult with Photoshop as well.
