Hi,

anybody here who would be able to answer some questions regarding database and could kind of give "training on the job" not too expensive?
To clear this, I would like to use a travel database given by either by ian.com or anybody else and do need more infos about it.

:tri:

is it a MySQL/PHP combo or what?

Err, can you repeat that, except differently. I feel like I missed something...

PHP - A server-side programming language that allow for powerful use of databases, mail forms, login scripts and lots more things. Also used to connect easily to MySQL databases.

MySQL - The program used to write databases. The lanuage used is mysql (notice the difference). One of the most popluar database programs.

So, do some resarch on these two things to get more info. Then find out if it's in PHP/MySQL. That should set you off going somewhere ;)

Yes, THANKS, that was already very informative. Got myself some books today to learn about it, but that will take forever and a day.

What I wanted to get was a new travel ( hotel ) directory / site. Obviously the database is given by the affiliate partner, but I have not used it yet and want to add it...and have no clue.

If any of you has an idea what I mean, could you please give me a hint for a price for such a project???

ooh, what books? I'm not gonna give you a quote, since i dont wanna screw you over, lol, but there are some nice PHP'ers here that would be glad to help!

Chelsea, before to have any quote, you need to know what format the database is I think.. The most common format on the web is mySQL for sure, but it's not always that, could be access, csv files, etc.

After that, you need to know how you want to incorporate the data in your new website, if you want a search engine, which options for visitor, etc.

Finally you'll can ask to a freelancer to do the job. You'll find a lot of guys ready to work on http://www.scriptlance.com/ or others sites.

If you need a free advice, I can do that if you give me more information and example of your data. PM if need.

Hope that helps,
David.

Thatยดs the point, Josh, """""BOOKS"""""I have less problems understanding French than reading any computer related books.

Years back when I learned BASIC in school we were working on it, but BOOKS have never been good for me to learn.

The ian database is simply a data dump of hotels. I believe it is a tab delimited file that is importable into Excel. I have just begun using this technique with another affiliate.

The excel file can be manipulated any way you want - then output as a tab-delimited .txt file. This can then be uploaded into a MySQL database by using PHPmyAdmin, which is available on many server control panels.

Check out TravelSources.com or NetRateHotels.com as a sample of what can be done.

Before three weeks ago I had never touched PHP/MySQL, but a lead developer from an affiliate company spent some time with me and sent me some sample code. Note that when you drill down to the individual properties the link actually contains a subdomain with the city of the hotel. Figured that one out myself... :) :)

I like books as a reference. I get most of my "training" from searching the Net.

Yes, Bill, this is exactly what I try to get done...if I knew HOW it works I would love to do it myself :
learn and try and learn and try...

And considering the books : As long as it has not got to do with computers I constantly use them...only on this specific topic I am lost.
I must have read more books from our library than any other person, but when I stand in front of the "computer section" I only see WORDS that do not make sense.
Anyhow, somehow I WILL learn it!

If you have a good relationship with the folks at ian, maybe you can ask for some samples and/or some instruction. Otherwise the Scriptlance suggestion from "dgaussin" might be a resource. if you can get a sample built, you can then follow it and make your own changes.

Maybe in a few more weeks - after I actually learn some of what I have been doing - I might be able to lend a hand.

That's what brought me to this "old" thread today - looking for info about database applications, especially for "travel."
