Critique before re-design

I've been running this site for years and am getting tired of the design. I thought I would ask for criticism (good and bad) of the site and ask for any suggestions to the design and layout.

Well, it's a photo site! Make it obvious. An illustrated interface just doesn't cut it. Go for a nice photographic interface, one of my favorite examples is: http://jacksonlab.cshl.edu It's not a bad design, but not a design that fits the subject matter.
