Creating a backorder script

OK, i'm going to create a drop catcher, nothing too fancy which will catch 3 char domains etc,as it will be too difficult, just a basic catcher which will catch some of the less desirable domains,

I understand that the domains drops 2pm eastern time,

and i will use a number of online scripts to find the expiring domains,

i will use Enom to reg the domains, as they allow me to reg a domain through an automated script, yes?

the question i would like to ask is, is there a limit to the number of whois queries i send to telnet:whois.internic.net ???

or is there a faster way of getting whois information???

Hmm - First problem - if you do a whois you'll see the terms -

TERMS OF USE: You are not authorized to access or query our Whois
database through the use of electronic processes that are high-volume and
automated except as reasonably necessary to register domain names or
modify existing registrations;

Second problem - I haven't seen any absolute facts, but I've read somewhere that enom only allow a max of 1 access per second to their api. :alien:

It's not too difficult to write a script to catch drops, but you're competing with the big boys (registrars) who can access the database orders of magnitude faster than you, the chance of you catching anything is (I believe) negligable. If you're trying to catch one and they are trying to catch hundreds, you might if you're very lucky strike gold,

Hey, I don't want to throw cold water on the idea, it's an interesting programming problem if you have the time, just don't have too high an expectation of catching anything.

BTW: I'd love it if someone disagreed with this and could show that it is still possible for an individual to catch a decent drop.

Hi!

Unfortanly Codemerc is right :(
I've created a dropcatch script and believe me...I've never catched any domain!!!
Like codemerc said, the "Sharks" are out there and you have no change against them.
I also would like to leave the question on the air...
Can anyone show us that we are wrong?

lol thanks for the advice, i'm kind of new to programming so it will be a small project of mine, even if it fails i would of learnt something :)

ok, so first problem, the whois, so i can't send hundreds of requests to the whois server (the Dac you can, just thought it was similer)

and 1 access per second, hmm dam, would a way of getting around this be to create my own register? and bombard myself with these requests.

and i havn't got my hopes up dont worry :P i'm not expecting to catch anything big time, as long as the script works it will be good, and i can always improve on it.

Few more questions :)

you say competing with the big boys (registrars) i take this is not the same as a register, who just sells the domains etc, why is it that its not ok for me to bombard the whois and its ok for them?

thanks in advance :P

sorry if some of the info is a little wrong, still learning

is the actual problem here the fact that ONE person is trying to catch with ONE computer?
and larger places have many computers doing the pinging?

the problem is that big catchers are at the domains with 30 regitrars. i do not think a normal script has any chance of competing with them however efficient it might be

I've created the same script, that will register a domain using enom API, once the domain drop, but never catch a single domain.
BTW, mattonline, try using whois.crsnic.net instead of whois.internic.net
because internic.net seems to be cached, crsnic.net is more realtime
