Hi there,

I'm starting a simmilar site over in Europe and stumbled across this thread in my attempts to find out more.

I've tried contacting BBClassifieds (their script seems to be fairly useful), but I have yet to get a reply.


I was hoping someone could tell me if it is possible to edit php scripts easily so as to tweek them for your own purposes? As I mentioned I like the BBClassifieds script but it needs improving.

Also has anyone tried this out or have another to recommend. I spend ages looking through hotscripts but did not find much of use. I really like the design and simplicity of Craigslist and thus want to get as close to this as possible.

craigslist is a great site! Even though it isn't gorgeous, it's soooo helpful. I used it to buy some of my furniture when I moved to NYC a couple of years ago. Good luck to you on building something similar!

The craigslist model is very similar to Ebays. The key to its success was starting early, and then for every new user, the site gets stronger and better. It also had the benefit of a nice, non generic name. Findthingsnow.com or something like that would not have been as brandable IMO.

A smaller niche site could be extremely successful (i.e. only garage sale listings).
