The layout is just a bunch of html which tho is boring isnt hard at all. It does seem they use CGI for their backend work but I am not sure.

well the site is huge so its got to be popular. i mean they have sites for most major cities in the country!!!

Its a free listings site so i think that a lot of people like to list their things for sale and whatnot for free.

It's probably reasonable to assume they have a CGI or maybe PHP script to run the backend. Those HTML pages we see are probably generated once a day.

I can tell you why it's so popular. Craig started his service in the Bay Area almost nine years ago here in the Bay Area. It was the first of its kind on the net for our locale, and through strong word of mouth it became like a household name for locals. He naturally expanded into other metro areas.

Don't let the simple design or functionality fool you. This site is successful because of its large userbase from being established for so long.

I thought it was a "old" (as in been there for long), I couldnt find it on the site but it just seemed like it, it had that "feel"

Sure, why not. I doubt Craiglist will be expanding to Borneo, so maybe that's a local niche that you could capture. Go for it!

You could start with a classified ads script or forum script. The hard work will come in promoting your site to people in your area. You may have to find some creative ways to get your name out there!

How about PHP Nuke or something similar. You might have to part with some NP$ to help get it up, but I'll bet you can find some help here. You can probably get hosting here, too.
