In my opinion, cPanel is the FordEscort / HondaCivic of web hosting control panels. It's popular. It's newbie friendly. It's affordable. It's dependable (for most common things). It leads the industry in sheer numbers.
Even cPanel is considered as the best Unix/Linux CP o the market I think the best choice for web hosting companies is not to go with standart hosting panels. Why? Because each hosting company should know what is the specific requirements of it's customers.
We have developed a Linux Control Panel - Next Color. It is aperfect solution for us. I wonder if we should release a commersial version or not but at this time is better not to launch it. What do you think about it?
Yes, partially because of third party addons. It works, it's familiar and easy to navigate, better than Plesk (at least the last time I used Plesk), and generally as good as most proprietary interfaces. It's popularity make it easy to go from one host to another that has it without a big learning curve.
its like microsoft, its the standard thing so its going to be the main 1 for a long time until something comes along that cpanel just cant compete with
but in the future i think that other control panels such as Direct Admin, ensim and plesk might beat cPanel. For example, people choose Direct Admin over cPanel because of security.
I would say yes also because alot of people these days look for cPanel whenever they're buying hosting because it has nice tools, an easy to use interface, and great features like Fantastico™.
It's a control panel..I've never used it because I have no idea where to get it (no link at their site...free or paid?), and their site is http://vdeck.com
Edit: :P....Yea...cPanel's the best...but I'm sure someone will beat it. I think it's the best because people like being lazy and like using Fantastico. Either that or they're n00bs :P
Just because a lot of webhosting companies have c-panel doesn't make it the best thing since sliced bread.
I find that Supremeserver CP is by far the best. It is much easier to handle and not as slow. I am confident that even people who are new to the business would be able to handle it much easier than CP
I'm quite new to cPanel and I already dislike it. H-Sphere or DirectAdmin would be better. At least based on the demo setups I've tried. Especially I don't like how webmail is accessed via cPanel. Too often the mail settings are too f*cked up on servers running the typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux + cPanel combination. Of course many seem to have forgotten to secure cPanel with SSL. The spam features are bad (heck, you can't get spam directed to any proper place), by default the catch all address is on (causes lots of nuisance with spam, so you have to be smart enough to set it to :fail: ). WHT isn't great at all. Still having trouble getting any SSL certificate installed (and no, not because being a newbie, but simply because it just simply doesn't want to work). Plus the controls tend to be very narrowed down for reseller accounts (depends very much on the host apparently).
When I switch host next time, I will certainly go with something else. No more cPanel for me. Especially trying to stand out from the crowd, so that I don't have to resell cPanel, but can offer something different. Right now all Finnish hosts using US based servers use cPanel, so I try to grab those wanting something else. Not possible ATM.
I find plesk a more stable choice, but clients seem to prefer cPanel, so that's what I use on most servers. I don't have any major reason not to use it, and so far support has been very good. Of course there'll always be many things to take care of, security wise for the most part, but that comes with the business.
