Does a country or capital or a city/region name
make sense in any tld? other than .com and .info?
or from the originating country....

example GLORIOSOISLANDS in a .ws or .co.uk?

any help?
thanks

.US domains.US domains
Good question. I have wondered the same thing myself.

.org and possibly .biz would work IMO. As far as, say having StLouis.co.uk or Dallas.in HongKong.us .... I don't think those are so great..

OK, what about a large city in a usa state in a .cc?

Just the city's name, one word.

Or how about .name?

I think a LARGE city name in just about any gTLD and in probably either .ws or .cc would probably be accepted, as people are starting to dissassociate those domains with the countries the originally represented. Those that definitely are associated with a country, like .ca, .us, .co.uk, etc. I think wouldn't make sense.

I think you may be okay with .name. I don't think you'll get rich on it, but probably something more than reg fee.

I just regged DubaiCity.org. I thought it was decent enough. Oddly all the other big extensions, including the .biz, .info and .de were already taken.

Ditto on your logic here.

Another good point.

According to godaddy we can, they will act as the "presence required"
for us to reg them. This is my 3rd .de with them. and so far so good :)

Only city I have registered currently is brisbanecity.info

I would have had sydneycity.info, melbournecity.info and adelaidecity.info also but registerfly stuffed the whole thing up and then by the time I tried to register them elsewhere it seems a proxy already beat me to it (must've been monitoring my searches).

I now know by experience never to deal with registerfly and I shouldn't have been tempted by their cheap .info pricing, it's just not worth it in the long run.

Regards
David

The problem is though: is a city name not like a trademark? I remember the Barcelona City Council claimed barcelona.com through a courtcase and they won that case... So be aware you may get an angry mail from the city council. Of course with a more unlikely combination it's probably the least of worries to the city council, I can't imagine manchester.ro would be of any interest to the local government. Of course it can be tricky to find a domain that is
a) interesting enough to sell with profit
b) not going to be claimed by the city or country

I don't think city/country/state/town names are trademarked, and if they were, as far as I'm concerned they shouldn't still have been available to reg.
Gov should have scooped them up when they named our fine land...

I forgot I also have Deltana.info
and they can't have it... :hehe:

I've got some

I have a few cities, but used a logical "branding" approach to selecting.

For example:

Annapolis.MD (for Annapolis, Maryland... annapolis = 36,000 OVT)
Myrtle-Beach.SC (for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina... Myrtle Beach = 155,000 OVT)
Topsail-Island.org (growing beach in NC, 6000 OVT)

The dashes take away some of the value on the latter two, but, Myrtle-Beach.com sold for $25k. I feel like .org would be a GREAT extension for a city name. It would give the "credibility" feel for a city guide or resource for the city.
