Hi guys and gals,

I am working on another project, which will allow selected users of the site to upload their own videos. Similar to youtube, etc, and many other programs.

However, all I am looking for is a script / program / software that I will be able to embed into my site from which the users will be able to convert their videos / mpegs into .flv files.

Once these files have been converted, the user will then save the file to their harddrive, and then upload that file into the server through an admin control panel.

I have no need or use at all for a video type portal, of which I have seen many programs online. I just need a script for the conversion of video into mpeg files.

I have been looking online for something similar, but I keep finding youtube type packages, which is not really what I am looking for. I just need a script / program that will allow selected users to convert their video files from mpeg or whatever format into a .flv file.

A similar type of site ( which is for images ) can be seen at ... www.resize.it On this site, the users can crop, resize etc their photos, and then save them back onto their computers. I am looking for something similiar, but for video conversions.

Does anyone have any idea if such a script or program exists ?? Any links or sites that you might be able to suggest to me ??

Thanks folks

Alex

Hi Alex,

Most of these conversions are done via modules on a server (eg, ffmpeg, mplayer, mencoder etc...). A script is only used when displaying the vidoes, not the actual conversion. PM if you would like more info.

Cheers.

Alex,

Sorenson Flash is quality software for conveting heavy video files into flash.....again, this is conversion of files - nothing to do with uploading....a little pricey at around 200 bucks...but worth it if you ask me...

Good luck

Allthings,

Thanks for the message. I had a look at it, and it does appear interesting.
The main thing I need is sometype of program which I can embed online, and allow specified users of the site, access so that they can convert their files to .flv.

I had a look at clip-share.com - and though this is a fully blown portal system like youtube, this as well is pretty interesting to me. The cost of the basic one is about $100 - not too pricey. However, the entire front end of it is not going to be used. I basically want just the ability for users to be able to upload / convert files. With this one, I was thinking it might work as they users can upload and convert their files through the portal, and then, use the embed link to insert into a database on the site for the project I am working on.

Thanks again though - I will drop Sorenson Media a line, and see if there is any way or any such solution they have that i might be able to embed online for my users to use.

Another alternative is to consider altogether is using a networking site such as ONESITE.COM....very low start up cost - $20 a month if you revenue share.....the good thing is that they host the site for you they take care of the video conversion of all videos that your users want to upload and they maintain a lookout for appropriateness of videos too....basically a full turnkey solution...you also get IM and a whole host of other WEB 2.0 freebies.......check out their site and the different websites that they have created for their clients.......

These can be stand alone sites or integrated with existing sites....

Alex,

Please keep me informed of your progress....

Good luck!!
