We've all come across some CMS, be it PhpNuke, or vBindex. But there are a few others. Recently I've been working with NCaster, a CMS designed for gaming sites. But I just don't know how to work the damn thing, its a complete enigma. I've installed it, and now I don't know how to create layout templates and, or display them, its nuts!

Maybe you can recommend some good CMS systems, ones which allow me to have articles, news, reviews and specific content sections which would be relatively skinable, and so that I could convert this site: http://www.thegamingnet.com/index.php to a CMS powered site.

I used to use PostNuke, and I did try other CMS scripts also. I wasn't happy with any of them because the designs I made needed to be coded in a certain way and some parts had to be removed because they didn't fit and that made the layout look bad. Besides that, it was frustrating setting up the links in the navbars and modifying all the other settings. I'm sticking to normal website, uploading the pages and updating the websites manually is faster for me, IMHO. :)

RE: Phpupdate.

Ok, I installed phpupdate, it doesn't look too bad, its actually come the closest to being what I need. But its buggy. It won't save my html files when I edit them.

They worked for me. Did you follow the instructions regarding configuring the file and directory permissions after uploading the files, and before installing?

I don't believe in paying scripters to do ditty little jobs. :guilty:
Write me an SSI like vBulletin and I might consider sparing some cash from my tightly locked wallet. :hehe:

Some people can't won't do it for these reasons:

1. Don't have the knowledge required.

2. Don't Have the time to do it themselves.

3. Are to lazy to do it themselves.

Still its good for business.

There is NEW book devoted to PostNuke that just came out and available on Amazon.com

I have it but haven't had time to go through it yet.

Few CMSes have good references. PostNuke may be a better candidate if said book turns out to be good, which seems the case on first impression.

Check out that book and see if it helps. Post your feedback here, or better yet PM me. I'm not settled on PostNuke yet. My other candidate is Drupal, not Mambo. I'm inclined towards PostNuke at this point. I'm no tinkerer and don't have much time to figure things out own my own.

Which version of PostNuke did you use?

Was it before 0.75? As I understand, 0.75 and later is the start of a new level of quality.

I use Ncaster for my gaming site and it's great. Once you figure out the basics, it's one of the simplest systems ever. They have support forums here which have solved many of my problems; you can also search them for getting started.

SilverStripe CMS

If design flexibility and implementation complexities are a problem, you may want to checkout SilverStripe (www.silverstripe.com). Compared to virtually all other CMS's (partially open source ones) its a breeze to customise (it uses a configuration interface as apposed to programming) and it's template language take about 10 minutes to understand if your already competent with HTML

It's not free - at about $UDS1000 per licence, but if this is a commercial endeavour you should easily save that in implementation times โ€“ a site which sounds similar to what you'd be looking for (using SilverStripe) is bassdrop.co.nz.

* Disclaimer : I work at SilverStripe!
