How large of a potential problem is being on a shared server together with a variety of sites or many spam sites?

The reason I ask is that I saw a video on youtube in which a Google engineer said that google understands that shared hosting is used and he CLAIMED that if your site was the only legit one and everything else on the server was spam, then they might look at that with suspicion. However, he spoke of it as if it was a manual process, which I am sure it is not.
