.co.uk Transfer?

I got 2 co.uk domains that I want to transfer to another registrar(the original registrar is Eclipse), I already asked Eclipse if I can transfer the names and they asked me to give them TAG of the new registrar, but what does TAG mean?
And also how the transfer process go? it's different from the regular domains, right? Can someone please give me details on how exactly it works and what I have to do?
And also what registrar gives the cheapest price for .co.uk transfers?
I'll appreciate any info and suggestions, thanx in advance!

To change the registrar, you need to do a TAG transfer. Essentially all the TAG is is the registrar who registered the name for you. The TAG is just a way of identifying who controls what domain in the .uk registry.

The TAG for Eclipse is ECLIPSE. When you apply for a transfer at another company, they should give you their TAG details for you to pass onto Eclipse. Simply request Eclipse to change the TAG of the domain to whatever it is and they will do it. For instance, the TAG for 1and1 is SCHLUND.

All .uk are maintained like this so it doesn't matter where you bought your domain from, they should still have a TAG.

To find out what TAG a domain is under, you can do a Whois Search and you will find something similar to the above quote.

If you are changing the owner of the domain however, this is where it gets complicated. You can do a transfer to let the new owner be in control of the domain, but that does not mean they own the domain. To change the owner, you will have to get a transfer form from Nominet and Pay a transfer fee of £10 + VAT per domain. I believe that the cheapest transfer rate isn't always the best btw :hehe:

I'm still kinda confused though.
So if I transfer the domain to another registrar, but my own account I just pay the registrar for the transfer and that's it,right? And if I transfer the domain to someone else I have to pay to Nominet, and the new owner will pay for the transfer to the new registrar?

Correct. You don't need to pay Nominet if you're just changing registrars.

But after I'll stransfer to new registrar, will I be able to push the domain for free to another owner, or will I still have to pay Nominet? And if yes, you think it will be better to sell the domain before I transfer to new registrar so the buyer will transfer the domain to the registrar they want themselfs?

If you are selling a domain, you have to pay Nominet to change the registrant. Pushes, Transfers or anything like that is not changing the registrant, this only changes who controls the domain. So you'll still have to pay to change the owner.

Keep the domain where it is at until you sell it, the buyer may want you to simply do a TAG transfer to their own TAG (TAG transfer is free to do, many UK domainers have their own TAG so in some cases, changing the control is totally free.)

You never have to pay a single thing for a TAG transfer. Companies charge for transfers just to get money out of you. They won't add 2 years registration onto the domain either (My experience with 1and1 UK).

I don't know the cheapest transfer deal, you'll have to shop around. My personal experience with 1and1 UK is that they do not add 2 years to the reg.

I just found one that offer it for free, 123-reg.co.uk, is it any good?
The .uk transfers there are free, and the prices for regging are really low.

I know a lot of happy customers at 123-reg. However, I know many more who have had bad experiences, or very bad experiences with them.

I would personally avoid them but I can't talk for them as I have never used them myself.
