City Names

Why do city names in any extention seem so popular. For example, owning Miami.eu.....Miami has nothing to do with the EU, why is it a valuable name?

Also, when you guys look for city names, what do you look for? What is the minimum population you look for? Would you still consider a city that has over 1 million people, but is in a not popular country?

I like cities because people need info on where they are going and where they are. Your example of miami.eu doesn't quite make sense to me either but miami.us would be very nice indeed.

Actually, miami.eu would be nice as well.

The popularity of these names is driven by the size/noteriety of the city, as well as the popularity of the extension.

I'm not saying miami.eu would suck, I just don't make the connection of the city with the tld. Similarly I would be challenged to associate Helsinki.us. I'm not saying it completely lacks market value, it would just be odd for commercial development IMO.

I agree with you.. I hate to see that sort of domain myself.

I like .info for city names and own quite a few city name, zip code, and area code domains.

Yea, I think .info works for cities. Using the previous examples, Miami.us or Helsinki.eu works for me as well. I'm hoping cities will work with .mobi also. Time will tell.

I picked up a number of Indiana city domains in the .in extension, figuring that something like Greenwood.in would make sense to the residents of Greenwood, INdiana...... Not sure I will keep them, though they do get a fair amount of hits. If I took the time to develop them, I imagine they would be fairly successful.
