'Check domain names for penalisation'

29 Jul 2008

Having a domain name which has been penalised or delisted by search engines in the past can damage rankings, an article has revealed.

Talking to Practical Ecommerce, Chris Stump from Onlyhammocks.com revealed that despite months of search engine optimisation just a few of his hundreds of pages had been indexed by Yahoo!, Google and MSN, and those were appearing well down in search rankings.

After research, Mr Stump found that this was due to a previous incarnation of the domain name which had been used as a spam site.

During this period, Practical Ecommerce reports, Yahoo! and MSN had banned the website, while Google had penalised it.

The news provider recommends researching the history of a domain name at Archive.org before buying it.

According to Practical Ecommerce, potential purchasers should consult Google's Webmaster Guidelines to find out what kind of practices are banned by the search engine giant.

Business advisory service the UK Small Business Directory advises those looking to optimise their search engine ranking to include keywords in the domain name, create as much interesting and relevant content about products as possible, and have four or five well-researched primary keywords.

Just like buying anything else...its called buyer beware. Its unfortunate to have this happen especially when you pick up a domain. The good part is thought that if you do post quality content and improve the site's quality you can appeal the penalization or ban to via Google Webmaster Central.

hey, do accounts get penalized for posting articles every single day or sometimes even more often than that?

I highly doubt that would be an issue Shockie. After all content is king :)

Well I have seen Google penalizing domain names but Does Yahoo and MSN do that too ? I haven't seen anyone talk about it or maybe no one bother about it.

Only if that content is duplicate content, in that event those particular pages may get penalised.
