How do you choose a domain name? Throw darts at a dart board or do you do some serious research?

Here's a list of 10 important TO DO's for domainer's before plunking down the cash for a domain:

6. Ask myself is it a trendy phrase? Is it sustainable? Will it be hot next month, next year, next decade?

I do all those and more in about 5 minutes for any domain I want. Still it's a good page for newbies.

oh and as a side note, LLL.ext, brandables, etc constitute as "making sense". but when you just jumble words together without really thinking, then it doesn't make sense (such as telechargernet.info).

Even trendy domains make money. They don't need to be sustainable, you just need to have the foresight to recognize it as such and sell on the hype.

Anyway, by sustainable, I bolded that to mean that I would suspect you'd want even a trendy domain to last more than a few weeks of interest?

Well, this is just my personal experience, but I've found that you need to research market trends among domainers as well, because for the most part, we are predictable. Someone posts a thread about a trendy new "something" and suddenly everyone is rushing to register all the good domains. So if you get in early enough and can snag a few good ones, more than likely you can sell them all within a week. A day later some latecomers will see the thread, realize that everything good is already gone, and they'll be willing to lay down some money for a nice domain out of fear of being left behind.

So you make a few nice flips and forget that "something" ever existed In most cases, you can do this without ever regretting it, but if it's something that is definitely sustainable in your mind, then you may want to hold it.

True, everyone has a different agenda/style. Whenever I'm looking at purchasing a domain, I always have 3 simultaneous threads running in my head to determine if I like a domain on the surface. 1. End-user potential. 2. Development/Long Term potential 3. Quick flip. If the domain falls into 1 or 2, I do more research. 3 is usually keyword related, so if it sounds nice, I'll buy it.

There are definitely a lot of domains that I've bought with the sole intent of just flipping to fellow domainers though. Some of these have been like I mentioned previously, HOT domain threads... I've flipped a lot of LLLL.coms, yet held onto a nice one I knew had end-user potential (and I made a nice sale). Also, development projects are usually predictable as well. Alot of domainers are developing the exact same types of sites. So if you can find a nice domain that utilizes the common keywords, you can usually make a nice flip as well.
