what is the law saying about people who have the same name as a celebrity and who take a site in their name, eg. "michaeljordan.com" which is a fairly common name and then use the site for something completely and totally unrelated to mj, i assume this would be fair use and not create problems ??

I am no lawyer but this seems reasonable to me. Being right though doesn't mean you won't be sued anyway.

Provided you don't use your name as a means to legitimately acquire the name for the sole purpose of extorting the celebrity in question, then you're well within the "acceptable use" of American laws. Seeing as most celebrities reside in the United States, I would imagine they would have a heck of a hard time causing problems for you should you live overseas regardless of your intended use. I doubt many celebrities (or even their agents) are all up with ICANN policies and such...
