Can I buy a Canadian DN while I'm not Canadian?

I guess my question is clear, I found a good Canadian domain name (.ca)! the condition to buy that domain name is that you must be Canadian or have residence there!!
What if I buy that domain name from my friend (who has residence in Canada) and who bought it first? Is it legal for me to own that domain name if I buy it from a Canadian owner or from my friend who is resident in Canada??

(sorry if my question is not in the right section)

You need to be a Canadian citizen or resident, or a local corporation, or the Queen of England - there are not so many ways around it :)

I was told by a registrar rep that that Californians buy .ca's. Maybe there are ways, i don't know the details. It's risky if you can't protect the name.

The best way would be to set up a Canadian company.

.ca is used a lot here even the big players market with the .ca version of their name.

Thanks for the answers :)

So if I buy it from my friend, any one from Canada can take it from me or any Canadian registrar can take it from me! can't I transfer it to my registrar (French)? one other question.. can I devolop it to a website and keep the owner that Canadian friend or canadian resident? is this allowed?

Don't believe everything you hear.

If the registrar is not accredited by CIRA there is a high risk of losing it.

If they are accredited, and are found out for registering .ca's for those that are not eligible
then they risk losing their relationship with CIRA and their ability to sell the .ca

** Some registrars, like Godaddy used to be able to be the required "resident" for you on a .de
but NOT for .ca's

Thanks for the answers :)

you and or your friend risk losing it if it is not legit - it's not worth it if you are
building a brand/site around the name.

and it won';t matter where you transfer it - CIRA has the power to go right in and take it!

CIRA LOVES their ccTLD and monitor it very well.
Plus, you have to watch for the jealous ones as well - if they report, then another risk to consider ;)

Best would be to contact the registry and ask them the questions.

If you don't do it legitimately you can lose your .ca domain.

I'm sure there are no rules about using your friends account to make a webpage for them. But check it out. ;)

So do you think that my last solution will be to ask from a Canadian person that I don't know to register this Domain name for me??
How can I trust him/her?
Are there any Canadian domainer in this forum? How can you advice me?

Plenty of Canadians on this forum! You ask "How can I trust him/her?" well I ask the same basic question.."How can they trust you?" Trust is a two way street!

Personally unless this is the "best name ever" , I would find another name in a extension that I can register.

He can trust me because I'm going to give him the name of that domain name and he is going to be the owner.. when he get the name how can I trust him??
now that domain is taken in all other extentions.. all of them exept one or two african countries I guess..
Cira website says it's available.. and most of registrars.. but some others say it's not!!
whois.net told me this:
"Error message: The domain name provided conflicts with at least one other registered domain name and as a result is not available for registration (e.g. xyz.ca conflicts with xyz.on.ca)."

PM me your domain and I'll tell you if it's truly available. As for selling it, I'd maybe take a cut though.

The .on.ca is for Ontario - the registry has those all reserved. .bc.ca and .ab.ca etc etc

The name isn't available. Technically the name may not be registered in the .ca TLD, but it may be registered in the second level TLD.

As an example; nsrp.ca isn't registered, but nsrp.bc.ca is therefore nsrp.ca is held back as to not conflict with nsrp.bc.ca

It may show available some places as it's not registered, but, that's because it can't be registered.
