It says on .ly terms and conditions, you can't use that TLD extension for anything that breaks Libyan law, and being Libya a Muslim country that includes alcohol, gambling and pornography.

I would stay well away from .ly and any other top level domain subjected to national laws based on religious values incompatibles with free enterprise.

Users should provide the actual target (website) when using those.
Otherwise it's spammy.

Coming Soon to a Theater near you... what happens when 300,000,000 (guessing) links simultaneously stop working?

Masses of net trash being created... about...... NOW (or whever they get shut down). Imagine the traffic that Libya could "steal" here... enormous - though obviously they wouldn't be allowed to profit from most of it being why they shut it in the first place. Right?

Like the content of the .ly short links have any effect on the population of Libya. It's a very sad moment anytime when religion is put above rationalism.

Did any of you actually read the article?

Mr Alaeddin ElSharif from NIC.ly told vb.ly co-founder Violet Blue that a picture of her on the website had sparked the removal.

"I think you'll agree that a picture of a scantily clad lady with some bottle in her hand isn't what most would consider decent or family friendly.

"While letters 'vb' are quite generic and bear no offensive meaning in themselves, they're being used as a domain name for an openly admitted 'adult-friendly url shortener'. It is when you promote your site being solely for adult uses.... that we as a Libyan registry have an issue," he said.

no_url_shorteners has nothing to worry about.

Glad to see you are an expert on the implications of Sharia law on internet businesses running with the ccTLD of a sovereign nation.

This absolutely has potential impacts. Not that I'm an expert either :o

I agree with you, Steve. As long as no_url_shorteners keeps itself out of such behaviours, there's no problem at all.

What behaviours? Linking to adult? Linking to gambling? Linking to Alcohol? Linking to pictures someone took of their girlfriend on a beach in a polka dot bikini?

Please enlighten me as to where these rules are "written", I'd like to see them.

Behaviours such as going against the registry rules which include using a .ly domain for building adult-oriented websites, as stated below. Nobody forces you to create a brand on a ccTLD, but if you do, you need to make sure your website has to comply with its rules.
