Ok well I have been running a music site now since 1995 and it has its ups and downs and right now is back on an up swing.

What I was thinking as part of marketing is to get more and more vistors (right now avg about 150 a day) is buying domains that are 100% relevant to my site and having them foward to my actual site.

How good of an idea is this and do you think it could help re-direct some new traffic. (well it would since it would go directly to my site but I mean is it worth to invest in)

Was thinking about 10 domains $100 fresh reg but again 100% within the scope of the business.

Anyone else do this? Please advise from you seasoned SEO vets..

i think that the success of this tactic relies heavily on previous traffic to those domains. if there was a decent user-base and good relevant (targeted) traffic, then i would consider buying up the domain and redirecting the traffic. however, if these are completely fresh registrations (not previously developed, no backlinks, etc), then i wouldn't bother.

Ok..Yes these would be fresh reg just using the same keywords as my business. I did miss out and another business like mines name dropped and i missed catching it..man that would have been great!

the fresh reg's probably won't bring enough traffic to justify them, but another positive aspect of taking up those domains would be to really own a good part of the market of domains in your niche, which will can somewhat serve as a barrier to entry from competing businesses.

I thought that doing something like this could hurt you with google. I could be wrong but I had it in my head that once you get over three domains pointing to the same site, you start to get penalized in terms of page rank.

You can build small little websites out of those new domains - keep each original and different from the last and simply link to your main site. You will get traffic and no penalty. Don't go crazy and do a dozen this way on the same ip range though - they MIGHT catch on to you.

Ah no. If that was true it would be oh so easy to sink any competitor - just link four times to their website. Pagerank is WAY over-rated anyways. Build solid content websites with real content that is original and google will reward you whether your site is a pr0 or pr9.

it may be worth the money to buy the website (not the domain), then you may migrate
the user to your site.

On the forwarding part, if you do a 301 redirect, it should be OK, but as other people said before, unless your fresh reg names happened to have type in traffic, it does not
help.

My suggestion is to build a website out of those new domains. Make the content for each of those websites unique but definitely related to your main domain. Then you can have a link to your main domain from each of these newly-developed sites.

Use domains to replace (or create) subpages of your main site. Choose highly targeted Keywords that are not covered by your present domain for that purpose.
