do you have a proper use for it? if so then there is no reason not to register it as you may actually get residue traffic from them (people typing .com accidentally or forgetting to put the extension on).

If you are wanting to register the name however solely on the fact that the other extensions are taken then it is a different matter. It is 1 of those things where trying may be the only way to find out.

If I see a .com not taken, and the .net is taken, I generally check to see how popular the .net site is.

PR
Backlinks
etc. etc.

Don't forget to also check OVT and search engine listings.

A sneaky way of finding it how much traffic the .net gets is to possibly contact them posing as a potential buyer for the site and get hold of their traffic stats.

Then you can firmly establish whether it is worth it on not.

Depends how high your morals are :D

yes if the .net is a super-dooper website then go for it, but if it is only parked and there is nothing special or interesting about the name then don't

I got a .com where the .org was developed and .net was taken. It gets quite a lot of traffic & I made my money back for the reg fee within a couple of months. Parked it with links to what the site offers :)
I brought another .com in the BuyDomains sale for $50. The .net .org. .co.uk & .eu are all taken by different companies. Have since had higher offers, but am waiting for the right one :$: :) :$:

Do your research b4 buying.

If you want to test traffic, consider using Moniker.
They offer $6.95 .com pricing to NamePros members, and they allow you to "delete" domains within 4 days (with a reasonable $0.25 fee) and get a full refund.

If the .net version is developed site & receive traffic (You can check by alexa ranking, backlinks etc.), then you should get the .com & park it or directly market it to the .net owners.

I would get it only if I thought it was a decent name or if some of the other extensions were already developed.

It depends on the value of .net. If the .net has value then grab the .com.

If the .NET is developed and a popular site, then the .COM will likely receive fallover traffic as a result, but the existence of a .NET doesn't automatically make the .COM valuable. If it's undeveloped, and the name is not otherwise special, than take a pass.

A lot of times the .COM was originally owned by the same owner as the .NET and dropped on purpose, and he intends to drop the .NET as well when its expiration date comes up. (does that make sense? :p)

The .com should be your first choice. You should always shoot for a .com, then a .net second.
