I'm having some trouble searching dmoz.org - I have a number of sites that are listed, but when I search using the url or the keywords of the domains, they don't show up - it's only when I go through the most general keywords and then search the directories that i eventually find them....

First of all, am I doing something wrong or amazingly stupid?

Second of all, is there a GOOD tool for bulk checking your domains/sites to see if they're listed in dmoz (and which specific category)?

Thanks,
John

DMOZ does still use your own "meta description" as their description, as well as page titles. You should be able to search at dmoz.org by these terms and find your domain. The words in the description are my exact meta-description from the index page. It will show under the listing what category you are listed in.

Example:
One site I manage is uwimages.org, and underwater photo competition.

Searching dmoz.org for underwater photo competition finds this result:
http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=underwater+photo+competition

My site listing shows:
# Underwater Images Photo Competition - Annual international contest. Includes award prize list, sponsors, charitable benefactors and related organization links.
-- http://www.uwimages.org/ Arts: Photography: Contests (2)

My site is listed in Arts: Photography: Contests.

DMOZ being a directory, is sorted by humans, therefore keywords in the domain there are less important that they would be at google, and may be ignored altogether if the content is worth them listing. I don't think searches there would look for parts of a domain name, but may in fact search whole domains as in this example http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=uwimages .

If you do a search using just domain.tld the site should show up in results at dmoz. It might be cluttered with other results if domain.tld.addon is listed there as well though.

Hmm. Thanks much, both of you for your responses - reputation given. :)

However, I should have elaborated. First of all, I have an active site that is dmoz listed but I can't seem to get to it by any keyword or the domain.tld while searching... only by going into its category.

More importantly though, I bought a number of domains not too long ago that were DMOZ listed. However, I don't know how to check if they still are, as I don't have a clue what category they're in (some are foreign) and keywords aren't helping me find them. I just need a tool that I can type my domains in and it will tell me if they're DMOZ listed and what category they're in... that's my plea. Anyone know of one? Thanks,
John

All my listed domains do come up when I enter the basic domain. However these two passages from the DMOZ site may affect your search.

Submit pornographic sites to the appropriate category under Adult.
Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.

You might also find some help in this part
If a site you submitted has not been listed after a month, you may check its status at the dmoz public forums.

This link may help as well:
http://dmoz.org/help/search.html

If you bought a domain and took the contents off the site, it may have been delisted as per the following:

The site doesn't comply with our site listing guidelines. While the ODP is more inclusive than other Web directories, and attempts to be comprehensive in scope, there are sites we generally do not list:

-Mirror sites
-Redirecting URLs
-Sites containing primarily affiliate links
-Affiliate/reseller/franchise sites with no unique content of its own
-Illegal sites
-Sites devoted to the sales and distribution of a single product should be avoided, particularly if they are affiliate sites or if the site is merely a distributor for a manufacturer already listed in the Directory. The purpose of the ODP is not to replicate the individual listings of an online shopping catalog
-URL consists of a search result set from another search engine or directory

Domains will only stay listed if the content remains. If you buy a listed domain and point it to a parked page or something like Roar, it will probably be removed.
