Branding Question - Big 3 vs Other Extensions

For the sake of argument I am going to consider the big 3 -
.Com / .Net /.Org

They are the original ones that most everyone is aware of. I think if you asked the average Joe they will have never heard of .Mobi / .Asia / .US / .Info

I don't know how many other extensions exist currently, or there will be in the future. However there will always only be one .COM

.Net has its place also. In the tech field, forum field, etc.
.Org has its place also. Charities, Help Groups, etc.

If you look at any TV commercial or print ad the website advertised is at least 90% .COM, and the leftover are normally .Org related to charities or help groups.

I can not remember the last time I even saw a commercial on TV for a .Net

I am wondering why so many people have such high hopes for other extensions. If the extensions are ever going to gain traction don't you think there would be more references to them in the mainstream? When is the last time you have seen a TV commercial or Print Ad for any domain other than one of the big 3?

I certainly understand premium domains with other extensions, however I have seen people proud of their .Asia regs, but I have seem some of those where the name regged was still available in the .COM

I guess it could break down to a comparison of investors vs speculators. The big 3 domains are more expensive to buy, but have lower downside. The other extensions could have big upside, but also have potential big downside.

I don't think its the actual extensions people have hope for really but rather the keyword(s) that can grab for the less desired extensions that exist. Just my opinion though.

True. Buying domain is like invest on Real estate. You can invest .com as downtown building, and other extension as urban town house. For those with nice lake view or around a nice school will still have a good value.

It takes time as well. 10 years ago, many people didn't know what is .com as well. I will be no surprise to other extension been advertised on TV in about 10 years. Especially on the interactive Internet TV

I agree there. But many of these domains I see daily are like living in a hut in Ethiopia.

Can you say that all town houses are worthless for investment ? For those with nice lake view or around a nice school will still have a good value, don't they ? :]

Bmugford, very impressive prompt response while I was still rephrase my post. :guilty:

Yes, in that point, I agreed with you.
.com will remains as the king as least for our live. Just holding gTLD extension and wait to flip it after few years later might not be a wise strategy.

People register garbage domains with all extensions including .com
That's not the fault of the extension.

i think currently people (non domainers or good internet users) are mostly familiar with the top 3
The first word which pops in their minds about websites is .com
also there is the .tv which appears on tv alot they might know it well too
it will take 5 years till they find mobi asia and .info as 'normal' extensions
