Worth registration cost, all other extensions are currently available to register, now if you develop a site with rich unique content the price can be whatever you make it. Build some traffic and revenue proof over a year or two.

I went ahead and picked up the .org/.net/.info since there is a chance I may develop this. I have a video game news/forum site in the 110,000 alexa range and growing that I can pull traffic from to get it going (was looking for something more broad, though not this broad, but will still work with it just to see!).

Alexa is a horrible way to rank\value a website, a very small amount of users use that toolbar, and in reality the alexa bar is nothing but friendly spyware.

My apologizes for using it as a way to rank the website... my point was that it is a popular site with steady increasing traffic, at least enough to get another site started from.
