Exodus recently paid $1.9 million for the domain name and $100k for an Insta handle.
With more and more companies running ads on Instagram, I think Instagram handles and Twitter handles are becoming much more valuable.

Is it time to start scooping up Insta and Twitter handles along with domain names?
Would it be ethical?
It would take less than 10 minutes to add these.

They have been valuable, for extremely high quality ones...ones have been taken for a long time.

It doesn't hurt I guess, but I don't think it matters that much for your average run of the mill domain worth low $X,XXX or something.

You'll find getting exact matching usernames (decent ones, that represent decent domains) on every major social media platform is quite a task, they're all taken. You'd need to cut a deal with individual owners of those accounts and see if they'd be willing, every time...and I think you'd get ignored more often than not, unless you're a major company and have a serious presence about you, but that is a rare occurrence. Take for example "green chair"...I've just said this random combo off the top of my head, and I would bet this is taken on both Twitter and IG, whether active or inactive

The least valuable / crappy usernames will be available, resulting in the domain probably being crappy too, and that's pretty pointless. When you sell a domain the business will probably be happy with adding underscores or the word "official"...the average user will be satisfied with this most of the time, as far as they're concerned, considering the hassle in getting exact matches. IMO

I thought buying/selling usernames was against TOS on both platforms. How did Exodus do it?

You don’t always need the exact match username the same way you don’t always need an exact match domain.

For example, Apple could use thinkdifferent as their username across all social media if they wanted to and it wouldn’t really make a difference. You can go with your company’s tagline, or something relevant. Personally, I think getting creative with domains/usernames helps companies stand out!

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Most are happy with some combination that involves an underscore, the word "official", even a slogan associated with the brand as you said, in absence of the ideal. If my brand is "hot cakes", obviously I'd like "hotcakes", but I'd still be happy with hot_cakes, hotcakesofficial, realhotcakes etc

Great thread for future newbies, thanks.
Its part of the domaining job imo
Maybe a new company is emerging, they could buy an exact match .com or .xyz for 25k and not be able to get social media accounts that match, or go with a brandable name for much less, and score their social media handles.
This website has been very handy for me, it checks a username in 90 different social media sites.

It is not allowed, though it is also rarely enforced. There are many behind the scene deals, but the acquiring parties are all at the mercy of the social media app should they choose to actually enforce their own policies.

It is not something I would go around bragging about.

Plus this is an investment which doesn't require any money! It's free! And these platforms are some of the biggest advertising sources for brands!
So $0 investment, highest traffic! I can't think of a better model, if this works actually.
