Does this mean it went to a Namecheap expired auction? Come to think of it, do all these reported sales come from auctions, or do they also include lander sales? I've always assumed not because of the prices but it's good to clarify.

Most of the sales above are from expired domain auctions, with only a small portion coming from direct sales. On the other hand, all expired .ai domains appear to be handled through Namecheap’s expired domain auctions, though I might be wrong.

BM.ai and other .ai domains were in NameCheap expired domain auctions.
Tried to bid for bm.ai , left when it crossed 10k :xf.grin:.

That’s not entirely correct. bm.ai is not registered with Namecheap; it’s registered with Zenaida.cate.ai.

Yes. I mentioned its there in auction, corrected. Thanks.

All expired .ai domains go for auction at Namecheap , as per agreements between Namecheap and .ai registry ( identity.digital)

What a strange world we live in. If I may ask, will the payment from bm.ai go to his next of kin or to the registrar?

I honestly don’t know who receives the $55,000. Namecheap is the marketplace where expired .ai domains are auctioned, but the registrar for bm.ai is actually zenaida.cate.ai. My assumption is that the registrar ultimately receives the money (or part of it), but I’m not entirely sure what happens here.

I feel the same way,

I still don’t understand. Why do expired auctions sell, but during regular sales, no one ever prices them, or they underprice, waiting for the owner to kick the bucket.

Maybe that’s because some people think expired domains are more valuable. Or maybe expired-domain marketplaces give domain names more exposure than regular sales landers. Or perhaps people simply love to bid. I don’t really know.

Premium domains should be treated as part of the estate and put into some kind of legal safeguard for heirs to understand what they are and realize their value. Sad seeing this happen.

The idea that the relatives of the former owner of a premium .ai domain might receive something is very nice, but I don’t know whether the .ai registry would allow that.

I don't trust these sales any more

Once a Chinese domainer said in the Chinese domain group that he sold a .ai 85000USD and posted through Social media,After that ,The Whois didn't change and now he is still the owner of that domain,Howere, some domain medias reported his sales here and there are sales record on the web,Obsolutely,His marketing strategy is successful.

Registrar and marketplace/auction-house split the proceeds according to the deal between them....

Honestly, the Registrar should pay the sales proceeds to the deceased family. God Bless.

Pretty sure that in the case of .ai, the registry gets the lion's share and the auction house gets the rest, with the former registrar and registrant getting nothing. Note that the domain has a new creation date, so it's obvious that it was the registry who was the "seller".

In the case of TLDs such as .com where the domains are auctioned *instead* of expiring there are many different agreements, where the auction house usually gets the largest part (or all of it, if they're also the registrar), the participating registrars get a minor share and the registrant usually gets nothing (I say usually, because I once had a case where I activated "AUCTION" instead of "DELETE" on my expiring domain at one of the registrars and it went to SnapNames and I got a share; but it was once in a lifetime and I don't know if it still works like that).
