Hi,

I would like to create a wrestling blog and want to compile reports of recent events on it. I thought of spicing things up a little bit by adding footage of the shows on my blog. (that is, a few pictures of the actual event taken as a screenshot from tv)

I´am not living in the USA and was wondering if I would be allowed to do this or if this would be against the copyright of the owner ?

im certainly not an expert but I think posting pictures/videos would violate their copyright. I beleive they are an organization that are quite strict with it as well.

I think it shouldn't be a problem since the screenshots are from the TV footage and not from DVD or other media.Putting them up would come under Fair Use I guess.

tv broadcasts are still subject to copyright. In fact when video recorders came out there were big court cases challenging the manufacturers of them because it facilitated the breaking of copyright law, although if I remember correctly the manufacturers won as it was deemed for personal use only.

Another deciding factor on wether you can do this without risk of any action is the country in which you livel.

However I am certainly not an expert at this and my knowledge of this type of law is sketchy. The best person on this forum that could probably answer the question is jberryhill

Most likely a violation of copyright. Even if living in another country, it doesn't mean you are exempt. It may be hard for them to enforce, but still is wrong.

I recommend you request permission to post a photo. If you link to them, they may even supply a good quality photo for you if they see an advertising value to them. Approach them with the advantage of sending them traffic in exhange for use of photos. If they say no, you at least have a definitive answer.

Thanks for all the answers so far.

I did of course contact them but did not recieve a reply so far and thought some namepro members already dealt with such a question before.

I was not implying that "living in a different country" would mean I could use the pictures without fear of being sued. I just wanted to point out that I´am not familiar with US law.

I would never post pictures and the like without permission although I can´t see a financial loss or other disadvantage if a private website would do so.

you could always try looking on their website and see if they have any media they allow you to use.

You know the problem with that is that they have weekly shows and that I´d like to write about the shows the day they were shown to the audience. And some pictures would support the article in a great way.

I will start writing and hope that the WWE answers soon to my question.

Any decent company will allow this.
All it does is promote their service and increases service awareness for free.
But thats just the smart thing to do, some companys dont do that ( *cough* F0RD *cough* )
in any case i would call them and speak to a high level enforcer not some pweny sales rep. and dont give them the domain of the site when you call. be as annonymous as posiable untill they say yes and you have it in writing.

If this is just a few screen shots for a blog it might fall under fair use. You are given much wider fair sue rights when it's used for parody, education, etc.

But as suggested, there may be plenty quality media available if you just ask.
