I am looking at starting a blog to follow my earnings through web development and currently have the name ieatchocolate.net which is totally random and not really related to the topic but I bought it to make a quirky niche magazine but never got around to it. Should I use this domain for my blog or get a new one?

Its a memorable name, however, I would much preffer it if it was a .com, so if you plan on doing this seriously I would get a new name thats a .com. I think random/memorable domains are interesting specially for blogs as it adds more personality/character to the blog so I would stick with a random name.

If you like the name go for it, but I'd think about how you might feel in 2 years time about putting a lot of effort into developing it, and if you might wish you had picked a relevant .com instead by then.

If you want to be taken seriously as a blogger, than you should get a domain name that is comparable to the niche you're going to be blogging about. If you intend to sell the site in the future, than a .com is also the best way to go!.

However, that is not to say that using the ieatchocolate.net domain can't be used for your niche, it'll just take a whole lot of effort to brand your domain/ blog from it's perception of it being a food/receipe website to a website for web development, IMHO!.

good luck, let us know how it all works out!.

NO NO NO!!! :)

If you intend to make this serious, then do NOT use the extension .net. ONLY if you also have .com.

The domain name it self is a little too long, try choose one shorter and more brandable.

But ofcourse if this blog is only for friends and for fun, then the name and extension is good enough.

Just my humble opinion.

On the other side of the coin...

I picked a 'silly' name not unlike yours for my very first development site, and ended up selling it for 65k 5 years later. I don't think I would have done as well with a more 'sensible' generic term domain in hindsight.

TBH, I have had the name for a year now and its appeal has faded on me now and just makes me think of people eating chocolate, think its time for a change.

Thanks guys :D

Now any suggestions for domain names are welcome :tu:

I am sure we will help you with suggestions but you have to mention what topic/genre your blog will be about?

Get a dot com

Just get a dot com so you don't loss money in the future.

Having a unique domain name is an option.

Anyone ever think that having a domain called shoemoney.com would be successful? Content is key.

I'm aiming for a blog like the female version of shoemoney.com, johnchow.com etc. if that helps but I will be offering services like web and logo design on it.

if you tend to keep it, then use .net, if you intend later on to resell then use the .com

i would say its need to be a memorable .com or a name that has overture which doesnt have to be a .com i actually like ieatchocolate but names like that should be .coms

i just checked out some of the top blogs and their names have nothing to do with what their about but they are all .coms
