I was looking around to see what domains were available to make myself a blog, but all the domains I wanted were taken.

Then it dawned upon me that a ".blog" extension would be very popular, due to the vast popularity of blogs.

Has there been any push to get this extension and if not, do you think it would be a good new extension?

For me, I could see it being extremely well used and though the domains wouldn't have any real value on the most part, they would be excellent for personal and company blogs.

Well, if you watch the news you occasionally hear them mentioning internet bloggers and that has become more frequent lately - internet bloggers are well known for circling news that even reuters do not know about and thus the BBC and other news organisations over here keep a keen eye on many bloggers' sites.

That is actually not a bad idea at all. Blogs are becoming very popular nowadays and having its own domain wouldn't be too bad. Getting something like Tom.Blog would be awesome. Companies like WordPress would go well with a domain like this - promotes well :tu:

Yeah i know nowadays blog are incredibly popular, but i don't know if a blogger would give a .com on a .blog.
Altough it would be cool to give it a try :). IMHO .blog would be more successful than .mobi or .name :)

Interesting concept, can be very usefull for search engines to find information on blogs only.

That's exactly how I was thinking it could extremely beneficial, have a search engine simply for .blog domains. As soon as an event happens, the search engine could pick it up and thus it would be a valuable information source.

Why not:
.forum
.links
.news
.games
.photos
.host
?

All popular uses for websites...

.blog is the easiest to make a case for, but .biz was a TLD too far for me. Plus it would be another (n x $19) we all have to layout to grab the cool names at launch.

What's wrong with blog.mydomain.com? (That's a general rhetorical question mind, Sabre)

I can see where you're coming from, but the point you are making regarding more costs wouldn't matter, as the domains wouldn't have a particularly high commercial value if released IMO.

In regard to your last remark, a huge positive from having a .blog extension, as mentioned a couple of posts above, would be that a search engine specialising in just .blog domains could be set up and it would provide a gold-mine information source.

You could simply type in "Iraq" (for example) and get thousands of content rich blog posts on the subject. It would be perfect for companies and individuals alike, who may be searching for specific information.

Let's say 123company wanted to see the whether there would be a market for a certain product, they could search for information regarding similar products and peoples views on these products quickly and easily.

I could see .blog being nothing but a success. The pure .blog search engine is just one idea that would work.

Sorry, But, It's people like you guys with ideas for useless extensions that will eventually bring down the worth of domains...

Yes, instead of making the internet more useful, everybody should be concentrating on how to keep domainers happy.

A very twisted representation of what I meant.

.BLOG and other domains would not make it more useful. It will eventually confuse people...

EG:
Internet.cameras
Gaming.shop
Restoring.health
NextGeneration.web2

People wont know whether something is ACTUALLY A DOMAIN OR NOT, the whole point in distinct extensions is so that people can recognise a website address instantly. New extensions slowly eat away at this.

Technically we should just allow all extensions available to register. By opening up all of extensions would have the the same effect, but to a bigger extent. There will be more useless/inactive sites on the web, there will be to many domains for people to cope with and the distinction of a domain will cease to exist.

It's a good thing that ICANN keep extensions closed or reject applications for them, because most are extremely counter productive. It would become a complete mess.

I agree that most domain extensions should be kept closed, however this is one I feel should not be.

It's most definately not "useless", I'm shocked that you can't see any potential in the extension.

Potential in the short term, but not in the long term.

Specifically for .BLOG this is just a FAD at the moment which will soon fizzle out when the new fad comes in.

the more extensions, the more confusion the lower all

domains will probably go for in the long run, me thinks.

I can't see why it would "fizzle out".

In my eyes, blogs are going to be the new way of transmitting news large distances in a short space of time.
I can see news corperation utilising blogs in the new future and a if operated correctly, the new extension would provide as I said, a valuable information source.

Sorry, but that's the way you came across.

.blog may or may not be a good extension. That would open categorizing every website with an extension: ie,
.hotel .airline .news .movie .game .music .recipes .map, the possibilities are unlimited. It might be confusing, or it may actually make it easier to find what you are looking for. I'm not sure.

Because it's a fad/craze, as I explained before. People will eventually get bored of both writing them and reading them. The only use that they will have is for a personal touch for big companies to their users. Not only that, people just choose to call them 'blogs', they are just journals and no doubt people's 'blogs' will change back to journals/diaries soon enough.

It's like Myspace, their hits are slowly decreasing now, because it was a big craze that went boom... now it's fizzling away.

Crazes don't last and things rapidly change. I can think of a lot more useful extensions that aren't related to a craze that could be made, other than 'dot blog'.

I like the idea of the extension, just hate the word "blog"..

Sometimes I wish the New.net extensions had caught on.. I always thought it was a good idea having descriptive extensions as they would parse well with the search engines.
