Blockchain domains seem to be growing in the cryptocurrency space and competing for mass adoption. In fact today a new extension was launched, .crypto. The .crypto extension joins .zil, .eth, and others.

Currently the discussions for "Blockchain Domains" are mostly centered in the "gTLD" category of the "Domain Extensions" section. It is very important to note that Blockchain Domain extensions are NOT a gTLD as they do not resolve on the DNS or are regulated by ICANN. The attributes of blockchain domains and gTLD's are very different and should not rest together.

I suggest creating an additional category named "Blockchain Extensions" under the "Domain Extensions" section.

Yes, it will work ONLY blockchain supported browsers.

I don't think it will create a big market because of it's usage is just limited now. If they add more it may be hot.

Excellent idea! We'll likely add a broad category that includes other non-DNS extensions such as .onion.

We'll get with our tech team to see how we can categorize all of these under a single term or name.

If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Yes, we're going to add it soon.

We've had a few other things come up that took our attention away from it, but it's high on our to-do list.

    Coming (very) soon. :)

    Thanks!

Blockchain Domains are onboarding many people to the "domain" industry. As a proponent of the Decentralized Web the discussions have been robust on other channels around the importance of a good domain whether it be from DNS or the Decentralized Web.

    @Mod Team Bravo

Just to add. For category purposes.

As a proponent of the Decentralized Web, that uses "Blockchain Domains," I feel its important to separate from "alternate" or "alternative" TOR and "Dark Web" extensions such as .onion.

The Decentralized Web and "blockchain domains" operate on blockchains. It is a peer to peer network with distributed storage. Its unique and there really is no "alternatives" to its attributes. It's one of a kind.

Back to categories, and that's your decision obviously, I suggest using the terms "blockchain domains" or "Decentralized Web," etc, etc.....I suggest to stay away from "alternative," "alternate," etc., etc.

    IMO.....

    Cheers!

We plan to group them all (non-ICANN) under a single category because there is not yet enough discussion on them individually to warrant additional separation. If that changes, then we believe it'll make more sense for us to have separate sections for them, but we'd still want them categorized under a single umbrella (non-ICANN), so at that time, we'd likely create sub-sections within the forthcoming section.

TODO: Reminder for us to link this section to the new section.

But that is what they are. If something is not using the standard DNS root then it is an alternate.

If these "domains" are so great then the branding of them will not hold them back, just like if there is no real word use branding is not going to help them either.

At this point there is clearly not enough interest to have an entire category for just "blockchain domains".

I think NamePros has the right idea by grouping them all together for now.

30 years ago, "domains" may have been in air quotes too. Just sayin..

    Couldn’t agree more!

These are also not domains. They are characters that act as a payment gateway, just like email addresses. It’s really just a vanity license plate for accepting/sending crypto currency.

In Computer Science, standards change. Standards are dynamic. What is a standard today, may not be tomorrow.

If your basing your argument on standards it may not last the test of time.

How do you know what the interest is? Do you have stats? Are you saying nobody is using blockchain domains like .eth and .crypto?

They can do as they choose. I just made a suggestion. It's their website, it's their call.

I wasn't really thinking of branding. I suggested to categorize them properly to avoid confusion. Blockchain domains, or the Decentralized Web, is often misunderstood and including it in the same category with TOR, or "alternate roots," only adds to confusion. My suggestion was more educational based than branding based.

Under your argument one could say a domain is just a vanity license plate for IP addresses.

I guess when that happens then there is a new standard. Until there is a new standard, the other options are the alternates.

Not enough interest is easily quantified. There are only a limited amount of threads and discussions on NamePros, clearly not enough to justify an entire section just for that.

Your talking points are exactly why I suggested the categories. Confusion on what exactly the decentralized web is remains very misunderstood. Reminds me of this video.

    No.

You cannot build a full scale website or business on a .crypto. The main goal here is to act as a shortened wallet address to accept payments.
