Hey,

I dont know if this is possible, but it would be great if the avatar size (both pixels and bytes) was a bit bigger as it is really hard to make an avatar fit these specs (well I tried really hard and I couldn't anyway)

Thanks
Chris

I take it, this thread is because of the user mentioning his avatar is too big, in the chat about 5 min ago? :hehe:

How much bigger would you want them though?
Obviously they can't be too big, if RJ/db was to increase the size, would it really make a difference? :(

It's only a few pixels on a image. :o

Yep thats me :hehe:

I was hoping more the size in kb rather than the pixels. The one I wanted to use is 24kbs.

If it's .jpeg, save it in Photoshop.

Then, open it in Paint, and go to File > Save as.

It reduces the filesize by about 50%, and only looses a tiny bit of image quality. :)

EDIT:
Image re-saved in Paint:
untitled1mh3.jpg

Size: 7.29 KB

Photoshoped Image:
untitled1bz8.jpg

Size: 15.3 KB

:)

I would vote 100x100 too if this were to happen :)

You could resize it to 70x70. ;)

If you want to reduce image's file size online then you can use this website:
http://spinwave.com/crunchers.html

Do you know of any free sites that do this? I remember using something called GIFworks (I think) a long time ago.

We don't want to increase avatar sizes because of the loading times for our members on dialup and mobile devices. We need to keep image sizes reasonable. That's also the reason we don't allow images in signatures.

Hitch, that's a great tip. I've always used the "save for web" setting in photoshop to reduce file size, but this paint tip will give me another option. Thank you very much.

But these users could just turn off "Display Avatars" in Edit Options via the User CP.

Do you think it's fair that our dialup users (which is a lot of people) don't get to see anybody's avatars, just so a few of you can have a bigger one?

Just a thought,

In Photoshop 7 (I'm not sure if its in CS as well), when you go to "Save As...", choose a JPG and then you get a box come up with a slider from 1 through to 10 to set the JPG quality. Choose 4-6 and the image quality difference wont really notice as its a small image, once saved open it in paint and re-save it as a jpeg and the filesize will be very low and would have lost hardly any quality.

Personally, I dislike 100x100 avatars as they make the forum too cluttered, and TBH avatars have no use except for weird pictures or adverts for a service.

I would prefer that all users get to see all the avatars like this, in a smaller size, ie the Dial Up users, than a tiny percentage of members getting bigger avatars.

^ Exactly,

Members who want bigger avatars, why do you want them bigger? What benefit would it be to Namepros members?
