Two New Orleans police officers repeatedly punched a 64-year-old man accused of public intoxication, and another city officer assaulted an Associated Press Television News producer as a cameraman taped the confrontations.

There will be a criminal investigation, and the three officers were to be suspended, arrested and charged with simple battery Sunday, Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

Officer felt insulted? Probably.

Officer was racist? No evidence of that. Even the victim didn't feel that was the case.

Offer was under stress? No doubt about it. Who wouldn't be living in New Orleans for the last 6 weeks.

The officer was under stress (or a mixture of some or all of the above)...

The officer(s) has performed a dis-service to the force. He is a disgrace and a cross to bear for the fine officers who are going the extra mile to maintain civility in trying times.
I just get the clear impression he does not like being answered back to and felt he has unquestionable power. You know the type-you see them at work all the time.
There use to be a time you had no problem going up to an officer to ask the time or for directions.Incidents like these leave people hesitant to do so and that is now a rare occurance-too bad.

What those police officers did apart from attack an innocent man is totally undermine the general police force, as people will turn against the police force & people who already hate the police will have one more reason to hate, this can cause innocent officers to lose their life or be attacked (the people are "stressed" too)...

If the actions of a very small fraction reflect the actions of the whole then we are in a truly sad society. I have absolutely no respect for anyone who would claim this event represents in any way the police forces of NO or any other force for that matter. I stand firm by that claim as well.

I truly doubt this was a race crime considering the officer that stood by was of the same race as the victim. I've been waiting for this cry to come at some point or another since it inevitably does.

Why don't we all wait till this thing goes to trial and/or Internal Affairs before we get all dramatic and/or start making assumptions and/or reaching conclusions. :|

Agreed.. because the media will always try and sensationalize this.. the truth won't come out til the trial.

I don't claim the represent the entire force but the fact is that to some people they do & i'll bet my life that there are people who would be willing to shoot a cop for those officers actions...

I agree with you...

I was just throwing out possible reasons, because it was a truely unprovoked attack... Also if it were a racist attack what can the black officer do exactly? (anyway lets not go down this path yet)...

There's nothing wrong with speculation unless it kills anyone...

Don't they always :p

Those same people would be the same way regardless or whether or not this happened.

Call backup, help the man out (either during or after the fight), speak out against what was done...there are plenty of things for him to do.

Speculation is defined as, "a guess: a message expressing an opinion based on incomplete evidence."

Why would you "guess" that a person is racists? Or guess that people will now injure police? Why would you guess at anything so serious??

To make such speculations is very irresponsible. One, some may take your speculations as fact and two, they feed stereotypes.

Very true, but like i said earlier incidents like this push people who already feel animosity towards the police even further & these people before the attack may not have been at the point of violence towards the police...

Call backup, help the man out (either during or after the fight), speak out against what was done...there are plenty of things for him to do.

Also true but sometimes it's the hardest thing to do...

Why would you "guess" that a person is racists? Or guess that people will now injure police? Why would you guess at anything so serious??

Because there as long been an issue of racist incidents involving police in NO, so that may be an underling factor, talking of speculation why would people on this board speculate the police are "stressed" they may not have been there since the start of the disaster... If you think people won't feel like retaliating then you don't quite follow events in NO...

Again, so you're just guessing, feeding stereotypes and feel perfectly comfortible doing so. Tsk...tsk... :bah:

Speculation or no speculation if your trying to tell me that this incident only affects the police officers & the old man your wrong...

Fact some black people in NO are already pissed at the police.

Fact some people in NO were shooting at police during the disaster, they were not shooting for no reason they hate the police for there "own reasons" rightly or wrongly but they have do hate.

Fact those people will be more pissed at the police.

So where will this go, i would hate to speculate :]

photoshopfreak,

I recognize how you like to redirect the discussion but I'm not so easily distracted. :]

Were not talking about "some people" we are talking about you and your post...

Again, you're only guessing and in a situation as serious as this, that's very irresponsible.

This is an issue that deserves serious consideration and reflection. This does not include guessing games.

Guessing an actual reason for the assualt & to conclude that as gospel would be wrong, i did not state or guess he was racist, insulted or stressed, but after serious consideration over the period of first hearing of this case i listed the only possible reasons why an unprovoked attack occured, which IMO is unbiased & any reasonable person could come up with the same possible reasons, IMO the assualt must be due to one of those listed reasons not unless they just felt untouchable & fancied a fight...

Really? You didn't write this...

Never mind... I won't carry on a discussion with someone who can't even stand by their own words.

Well, he may not have been on alcohol but he may have on something else. I heard he had not touched a drink in 25 years. He stated also that he really didn't want to go into why he had to stop drinking. Interesting.

Talking of not standing by my words do you not remember saying the above?

then you said

Looks like you were guessing the old man was under the influence of drugs at the time & you were insinuating that there was some mysterious fault with the guy to to justify why the attack took place with your "Interesting" comment...

I do stand by what i said in full i did not guess what caused the cops to attack, otherwise i would of said they attacked him because they were "racist", i in fact made an entire list of possible reasons of why i personally feel why he was attacked, so if you want to say i guessed reasons then thats cool but i did not guess a cause...

Everyone has opinions and what anyone says should be taken as fact, everyone has the right to say what they want to & it isn't as if we are in a position to affect the out come of this case so don't feel uptight about "guesses" or "speculation" as most people in this thread are guilty of that...

For my satisifaction,it is not nescessary to see the before and after sequence of events leading to another pulpifying of a citizen by multiple police.

Exactly what I'm thinking. My dad was a cop for 30 years himself, and even he knew there's a line you don't cross (because if you do, you goto jail and you're some felons #1 target).

It was excessive force. Five cops (five point restraint) could easily have taken him down and let it go from there. Those bozos beat him so badly there were pools of blood on the concrete (you expect to see that much blood in a shooting!).

Those cops aren't fit to wear a badge. They took their frustrations out on an easy target, and thought they could abuse the public's trust. Let them face time with some felons to wise up (dirty cops need an object lesson).
