Two New Orleans police officers repeatedly punched a 64-year-old man accused of public intoxication, and another city officer assaulted an Associated Press Television News producer as a cameraman taped the confrontations.

There will be a criminal investigation, and the three officers were to be suspended, arrested and charged with simple battery Sunday, Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

Everytime something like this happens it angers me even mor than the last time. My question is this... if a boxer or a marine are charged with atempted murder for beating someone, due to their training making their fits a lethal weapon, why not the cops??

Cuz, they'll claim it was "necessary force." :td:

Ya know, if they had just not punched the guy in the face, they wouldn't have a problem. Well, that and not shove that AP reporter! :] What a buncha bozos!

Welcome to the sad, scary world of what happens when natural disasters occur and lawlessness breaks out. I'd attribute much of this to frustration to be honest. Yes, they shouldn't have assaulted the guy but after weeks of this crap going on it doesn't suprise me that some are breaking under pressure.

Another thing here, a 64 year old drunk can be just as rowdy as any drunk college kid and even worse in some cases. I'd like to actually see the entire video including what promopted the entire incident.

As for the officers and their punishment...comments such as the below speak for themselves...

They'll be punished.

Police getz' by wit alot of stuff.

One more comment as well.

Simply because the next time you or someone else gets into a situation where your life is threatened or is simply in danger of being harmed police can react without worrying about a lawsuit. They're going to be less like to do their job if they are restricted for pretty obvious reasons. Last time I checked, resisting arrest was illegal and common sense dictates you'll get treated roughly when you do some for protection of the police officers themselves. This guy felt the weeks of frustration going on in NO.

Where are you coming from?^

Two New Orleans police officers repeatedly punched a 64-year-old man accused of public intoxication, and another city officer assaulted an Associated Press Television News producer as a cameraman taped the confrontations.

Meanwhile, a fifth officer ordered APTN producer Rich Matthews and the cameraman to stop recording. When Matthews held up his credentials and explained he was working, the officer grabbed the producer, leaned him backward over a car, jabbed him in the stomach and unleashed a profanity-laced tirade.

So what was the camera man doing? resisting arrest?

The assaults come as the department, long plagued by allegations of brutality and corruption

Thank you for reminding me that the police themselves put up with a lot and that there is only a small percentge of officers that would even do something like this. The pressure they live with everyday must be unreal, the fact that they can control themselves after years of working on the streets is amazing.

not really...policemen carry guns...if anything goes wrong...there could be someone dead on the side of the streets.

I remember a print ad they used to run regarding police: "You wouldn't go in that alley for a million dollars. He has to do it for alot less".

The police are under alot of pressure and subject to alot of frustrations, BUT they still have the responsibility not to vent their frustrations on the public they're sworn to protect.

I dunno to beat an old person is a sin enough to burn in hell for many years...

I dont care how frustreated a person may get its still disgusting.

Also watch the CNN video, they show the poor old man covered in blood with head injuries, and still officers are kicking him. This footage was taken from a balcony after the street was closed off...
