Honestly, I don't like domains that are not .com. The whole idea of domaining, in my opinion, is that you own the best available .com, and everybody wants to have the .com domain. If they want to get the .com, they have to pay you, and they have no other option, they can't go around you. That's the whole idea, in my opinion. In other words, the buyer pays you for your .com because you have a sort of a "monopoly".
Now, if you don't have .com, if you have, say, .net, .org, or even the new extensions, such as ,io, .media, .tools (heard of it for the first time), what makes you think that if you have, say, a .io domain, the buyer is not better off buying .net, or .org? You don't have that .com monopoly anymore.
If you own BestGardening.tools, who says Best-Gardening-Tools.com or BestGardeningTools.net or BestGardeningTools.shop is not a better option (did not check if those are free, it is just an example)? And will you register a gazillion of these options to make sure you keep that monopoly? Probably not since they are darn expensive, even more than the .com, when it comes to those new extensions.
In my opinion, the new extensions, such as .media, .tools, or .whatever (any domain extension longer than 2 characters or not .com) seems unprofessional and spammy, and I would not click that domain name in search results.
But that is just my opinion. How much did you have to pay to register .tools please? I will give you my valuation then.
It's not zero, otherwise the domain is interesting, but definitely something like $X,XXX end user price.
