Best way to check domain status

I am doing a domain assignment I want to find out whats avail, BUT I am also not ready to reg them quite yet. I have learned (on this great forum) that one should not "show ones hand" before absolutely being ready to register. So how do you avoid this chicken egg dilemma. Is there a "safe" way to snoop around. Is there an absolute no-no way to see whats available.

The thing is I would like to present some unregistered options for the client.

Is the best way to simply type in a web browser...? Is sedo "safe" without being ready to act..? Are the domain registrars safe to snoop.

your best guess would be to check out http://whois.sc and type in words there. It'll show you the domain name and several other domain names containing that word.

I basically just meant checking availability. Since I have read one should be careful where and how to check unless ready to reg right away...

Try either internic.net or networksolutions.com. They should have enough volume to make it near-impossible to monitor and pre-emp those who check only a few times.

The "should" is what worries me? Is it safe to just use the web browser and type in and see..?

I don't trust whois.sc myself. You can get the zone files and use that as a first level check.
