Hi all my question is the following...

Looking on godaddy auctions and seeing some domains with loads of bids and some with none for example a domain like bbbsmiamivalley.com with 4 bids £16.00 and then seeing something else fairly generic with no bids. why is this? and what are the primary things to look for before purchasing a domain and are there any tools I can use?

My thoughts were a good domain is something somebody would want, why would anyone want bbbsmiamivalley.com what makes it sought after?

Kind regards and thanks for your time

GD auction can be overwhelming to newbies. I recommend setting up an advanced search using these criteria. This will help you narrow down the potential domains. Then you need to do some additional work to find one worth bidding on.

Use this in advanced search:
Type: Expiring, Public
Extensions: .com only
Characters: uncheck dashes and digits
Domain Age: 8
# of Bids: More than 0
Traffic: Min 10

This search will help you stay out of trouble and narrow down your choices. Once you run the search, you then need to look for names that are 1-2 words, short, descriptive, have commercial value, google search numbers, etc. Bonus if there was a previous site up on the domain, pagerank, directory listings, etc.

Stay under $75 as a newbie to limit big mistakes and auction exuberance as well.

Good luck.

ok thanks that sounds like great advice! I will put this to use asap! what recommendation do you have for selling the domains I purchase? sell them back on Godaddy for a higher price? or list them on sedo... flippa etc? Im looking for small profits but quick sales,

Kind regards

List them everywhere, but definitely at GoDaddy and Sedo. Afternic is also good. Sell them at fixed prices in domain forums. You can list at Flippa, but don't go crazy, because they charge you quite a bit for each listing (I think $10). eBay is usually free to list and you just pay if someone buys it.

Start slow and small until you get a good feel for what sells and understand how the percentages work on your business model.

ok sounds like great advice!!!

I have just purchased phoneapps.org from godaddy auctions there were a fair few bids.. what are your personal thoughts on this purchase? it cost me £68 including the renewal fee, what would be your selling technique and asking price for this one? (I had bid before I had asked the previous question I will defo be using your plan from now on regarding just .coms) although this is a .org I thought it looked like a great name people would be interested in!) Your honesty would be greatly appreciated, if I have fluffed it I will just try and get some money back by relisting as an auction and learn from my mistake,

Kind regards and thanks again for your time and help!

.org's are tougher to sell, particularly if you are trying to "quickly" flip them. .org's should always make sense for the extension - usually good for areas like health, religion, non-profits, trade industries, etc.

"phone apps" is a pretty solid keyword phrase, and if there were more than 2 bidders, obviously you weren't the only one that thought it had some value. You may end up OK on this one, but you want stay with the .com if you want domains that sell more quickly and at a higher %.

List it on the forum and see what happens.
