I live on a small resort island and I'm thinking of creating a website about the island. I would also have some local businesses listed or able to put ads up in the future. It's only a small island but quite a few people live there and it's growing with tourists.

What would be the best domain (the .com & .net is taken) and these are the best available...

(Something)-island.info
(Something)-island.org

What country? Is the Com.au, co.uk, .us, .ca etc taken as well?

Or Alternatively...

The obvious choice in this case would be the .info

Or alternatively move to an even smaller resort and buy its exact match domain from yours truly. :)

None of them, I won't revel the country in case someone else looks it up and registers it. But yes the following are availble:

(nameofisland).xx
(nameofisland)island.xx

the problem is they seem quite expensive to register, maybe I will look around a bit more...

I would go org on these two choices %%-

a bit of a mixed bag huh! lets see what others say then.....

I'd say .info as there do appear to be real geo's developed and running on infos. An .org doesn't make sense.

The ccTLD would make the most sense if available.

even though I hate .info, i would see it as the better choice.. But quite honestly in your case i would register both.

Given the choice between the .org and a .info, I would choose the .info as it's the only one that makes sense for a GEO domain.

Do you only want some version of the pure geo domain?
Because you might also check if other serviceable domains are still available in dot.com for this place, like:
(place)blog.com
visit(place).com
see(place).com
(place)pictures.com
about(place).com
my(place).com
etc etc etc :)

Personally i would go with the .INFO
or something along the lines of
SomethingIslandVacation.com
SomethingIslandResort.com
SomethingIslandTourism.com

(Something)-island.org

Completely agree with Bannen. If you are serious about turning it into a portal for your island, then I would personally go with a brandable .com (or the cctld of whatever country you're in), rather than any of .org/.info choices mentioned.

If you want to build traffic through SEO of your site .org will do better

If you want to build traffic through your own marketing of your site .info makes more sense

If both, I'd lean toward .org

Good luck!

AFAIK there is no SEO advantage to be gained by using .org over .info

Congrats on the domain and the move, Bantayan Island looks like a very beautiful place to live :)

thanks, yes it sure is. I have a white sand beach and blue waters outside my front door. The locals are very friendly and its a relaxing place to live. Some say it might become the next Boracay, I hope not but it is gaining popularity as a tourist destination as more people know about it.
