What's the best place to register a domain name? Are all places the same pretty much, just different prices, or is there a real reason why I shouldn't go with who is cheapest? If I should just go with the cheapest, who is it? If there's someone particularly good that I should go with who is that?

nooooo they arent. here are some examples of problems with some registrars:

minor problems:
annoying control panels

medium problems:
cannot easily push / transfer names

major:
companies going bust / fiddling the books / you losing your domains

Some of the registrars I often see praised here on NP:
moniker
enom
godaddy
dynadot

personally speaking, moniker don't respond to my support emails, enom once gave me a blank order reference, dynadot is my current fave, but most of my names are at GD.

check out the registrar reviews section:

I know there's a bigger set of reviews, but can't find it right now, anyone got the link?

Okay, I looked at the reviews, and the best two looked to be namecheap.com and registerbird.com. Registerbird.com is cheaper so should I go with them? Is there any reason I should go with namecheap over registerbird?

Best Registrar???

1and1.com I think is the cheapest which gives you $5.99 .com .net .org domains but one of the most clumsiest and not for the IT challenged and even I find it not so easy to use so I don't use it too much.

GoDaddy.com gives you $6.99 for most if you meet certain requirements, using coupons or purchase discount rate membership, etc.

Moniker.com is great but a bit more for .com but their .net is $5.50 which is the cheapest around for .net registration.

Dynadot.com is $6.99 for most domains if you spend over $500 (cumulatively) or something like that.

In general, GoDaddy.com is simplest and near cheapest for .com .net .org .biz .us .cc .info.

Use Needname.com, Namecheap.com or ME.tv for .tv name registrations.

Domainsite.com offers most common reg at $6.95 and quite popular with many.

I also use Namebargain.com for the best .cc domain name pricing under $20.

Whiz.in for .in registrations.

Registermatrix.com or Registerdub.com for good .mobi pricing.

Namecheap.com is effective but $8.88 for most reg.

I personally use GoDaddy.com and Dynadot.com the most due to large number of domains I carry.

Couple of negative notes with GoDaddy.com is that it cost too much for .tv or .cc domains and transferring to/out of GoDaddy takes too long and the process is cumbersome.

I use Dynadot.com anytime there is a transfer in/or involved.

Your solution should be whatever works best for you and depends on how many domains you want to own, register, resell, park, etc. etc. etc. You get my drift...

Hope that helps a bit.

Registerbird.com is a GoDaddy Reseller. If you are thinking of Registerbird.com, you are better off just using GoDaddy.com.

If you want to just register a few names, Domainsite.com or Dynadot.com over Namecheap.com in my opinion but namecheap.com is a good choice as well.

I personally feel you should diversify.... You don't want all your eggs in one basket!
Look what happened to Registerfly! You would be pretty sorry if you had reg'd all your domains with them.

I think it is good to have accounts with several registrars.

I have accounts with moniker, dynadot, godaddy, dotster and enom.

I too am starting multiple accounts. I have one with Moniker (though they screwed up immediately and suspended my account since they hadn't yet given me a sales rep!) I spent an hour cleaning my cache repeatedly, trying different browsers, asking for my password (thought I was using the wrong one). All of this, only to get an email two days later telling me that they had restored my account and they had temporarily suspended alot of new users that day. I was very tempted to write and let them know I regged four more names in those two days (not alot of money from me, but still, it's the point).

GoDaddy tries to throw alot of extras at you, but if you make sure to click the continue or no thanks button, you're fine. Check your total before submitting the order. BTW they are running a special on .info at $ .99 apiece. I regged disappearing.info and plan to put up alot of valuable information about the extinction list for both plants and animals (to start).

I also use Bluehost as my hosting provider for my websites. They are pretty good, though they only do the top six extensions, and it's 10 bucks registration for any of them. Even if they can't reg exts like .mobi, they will still host them (that's what they told me and I said "well, I would imagine so, lol). Super fast support, and you can get help via phone, email or live help.

I'm going to try enom next. I agree with Len and Mowd-diversify. Better to be safe than sorry.
