i have one with ensim right now but wanna change
it doesnt matter if it celeron or p4 as long as it works

I agree, to save you a lot of money, try to setup your box at your house. One, it will give you the expirience needed, and two you will save a lot of money. Once you start hitting the jackpot on your e-business then think about moving to a company, for the answer of the question, I would def. go with ev1servers.net , They are fast, reliable, auto setup, and the people there are just very nice. 24/7 support is always a good thing! i think running a box from your house isnt such a good idea unless you know what youre doing and have the money to run a fast line into your house in addition to your regular internet. I have a windows server set up at my uncle's house but much rather just rent one out or get it colocated. You dont save much money because a server is expensive. If you run from your regular computer then look at slowness. Plus you have to know all the technical make sure your line is always up and everything its just not worth the hassle.

I paid about $300.00 for my server. It's been really rewarding for the last few years. I'm running a 1.1 megabit line. It's also cool getting to keep all of the monthly revenue. Expenses are low since I pass the expenses off to the customers. It's not for everybody though...

Yea i can see that you know what you are doing, that is great but for someone who hasnt done anything dedicated is best.

Home Server Vs. Provider (i.e. ev1; rackspace or other)

If you are going to use your "home server" for yourself and not customers- it's the way to go from a finantial standpoint.

If you are going to sell hosting services web-design or other web services use a provider go co-lo or month to month box. Customers like to know information even if they don't ask- multiple oc-12 contections, redundant power back-up, fire-suppression system...blah-blah-blah. Dual Pentium Xeon... stuff along those lines.

Dedicated unmanaged boxes are fairly cheap these days- along with the low cost is limited availability- ev1 usually gets new servers available fairly quickly you just have to keep checking there site...

If you are interested in an unmanaged box, use a web based control panel like plesk or Cpanel (my preference), they can execute many prefered commands/functions through a user friendly interface. Which is great for the novice admin...

Is Rackshack (ev1servers.net) good for just a standard web server? Like what is a low-cost server solution that is managed to the degree that server is patched by their techs fairly often.

You are right though you must know what you are doing. dns is the biggest issue. Of course there are alot of ddns companies out there for free. but it is much more fun to set up your own dns servers at home.

Of course I have been in the networking field for 5 years working on servers and building networks. I also went to college before that to learn all i could.

My suggestion to anyone that wants to learn networking is:

1. Go to school!

2. practice practice practice (Break things till you learn)

3. Reasearch all you can at networking forums.
