What's the best ccTLD and why?

I like .co but it is a bit expensive.

.US domains.US domains
I like .co.uk but then I would.. :bah:

Many countries have good cctlds.. Germany, France, UK, etc etc so each like their own.. I think .... .in will do well in time.

if you want domains you can register cheap, try .de, .nl , .be

This is a bit non nonsensical. "Best" is normative.. Best for what?

Best for selling to the UK market? Best for branding purposes? Best for hitting a music niche? Best for informational sites?.. Etc. etc.

I could go on.. So what kind of best are you looking for?

.eu
.co.uk
.de
.fr

If you're talking rank, here's what I think:

.de
.co.uk
.in / .ca / .com.au / .co.jp / .us
.eu/.fr/.at/.es
.me / .co

.Co is doing surprisingly well, a lot better than I ever expected for sure, but the proof of the pudding will be two years down the line, it could be flat like .me etc or it could really take off like .org

I forgot the .us and .tv :red:

.de
.co.uk
.in / .ca / .com.au / .co.jp / .us
.eu/.fr/.at/.es
.me / .co

I would put .in, .co.jp and .at in the same rank with .me and .co and would add .tv at the second rank (with .co.uk) :p

My personal favorites (all real):

.co.ke (Kenya commercial)
.co.ck (Cook Islands commercial)
.go.th (Thailand governmental)
.ac.id (Indonesia educational)

I assume you're aware of the local Japanese and Indian markets. :red:

.tv is more a gtld today and getting more so.

I don't really consider it a ccTLD in that sense, even though technically it is, why its not on the list.

Yep, their market isn't that strong :p

I know .tv is very popular, but it is still a ccTLD ;)

Yes, best in what sense? Investment & growth, I suppose seeing as we are all domainers?

I like

com.au
co.uk
ca
in

with

mx
com.br

as a longer term, more speculative play.

Don't know much about .fr or .co but suspect .de and .nl esp may not grow at the same rate as some others (as it is already up there)

I agree there Netfleet, i think we reached the max when it comes to .NL and .DE. .NL may grow to 5 million registrations but that is about it.

.FR likely to have a strong growth when they open up to the rest of Europe (to many restrictions atm). With some luck and alot of EU pressure this could happen next year.

.ES still alot of room for growth. But prolly slowed down by the current crisis in Spain.

.BE amazing that this ccTLD did not preform tons better. Maybe something for the future. Least the price is not an obstacle. 2.99 Euro

.DK strong potential, but can be a hassle when you sell one ;)

Possibly. The key in any ccTLD is development.

It might be attractive for a Francophone audience but based on tracking about 46% of .fr, I'm not so sure that .fr is a speculative TLD (as opposed to a strongly branded ccTLD).

.ES still alot of room for growth. But prolly slowed down by the current crisis in Spain.
Not so sure. They had a major boost when they relaxed registrations but that seems to be filtering out now.

.BE amazing that this ccTLD did not preform tons better. Maybe something for the future. Least the price is not an obstacle. 2.99 Euro
The current Eurid management (mainly ex-DNS.be heads) tried to boost the .be with free domain registrations - the idea was to make themselves look like serious players when they were given the .eu contract. Like most junk domain offers, most of them were dropped without renewal. Changed TLD landscape with .co and .me, especially .me, going for the personalisation market means that the .be is not so attractive for non-domain hack type domains.

.DK strong potential, but can be a hassle when you sell one ;)
An interesting ccTLD.

What a lot of .com domainers fail to realise is that ccTLD markets operate along different lines to global TLDs like .com where there is a large market and audience. The ccTLDs, unless they are repurposed like .tv, .co and .me tend to be highly inward focused and driven by the language and dynamics of their country.

In terms of real world juice, I like .de. .co has already leaped frogged a lot of cctlds because it is an abbreviation with a history. After.de and .co I like .fr.

What do you mean by that? 46% of what?

Also, jmcc, you obviously know your stuff with ccTLDs so I'd love to hear your opinion on .au and .mx (my main interests)?

What's the best ccTLD and why?

It depends what your target audience is.

I would rather have .CO.UK if I was in England, .DE in Germany, .CA in Canada, .ES in Spain, .US in the United States, etc.
