Hello namepros,

I seek advice. I own a three word domain name such as ThreeWordDomain.com. Recently I noticed that somebody registered the equivilant with hyphens (Three-Word-Domain.com). The owner name is public in a WhoIs lookup. Basically my question is: What do you guys think is my best approach to contact this person?

Regards,

Are you contacting him to inquire about purchasing the domain name?

No. I am interested in selling my domain.

verify that the person or company doesn't have a TM on their product. if they are "clear", just send them an email and introduce your domain to be for sale and if they are interested to let you know in which case you will post the domain on Sedo.
if they do have a TM on their product, immediately position your domain with a mini site that is as far away from their TM product name as possible, or make the first step to "correct" the situation by offering the domain to them for a reasonable price that is lower than the attorney fees that they would incur by sending you a C&D letter.

In my experience, it's always proven to be useful to be a straight shooter with no gimmicks and BSing.

best of luck.

Thanks for the advice,

Here is another question:

He has not yet put up a site (registered this month). Should I wait to see what the site is first? or should I contact him right away?

i think you should initiate the contact so that both of you know exactly how the domain is gonna be ... whether both of your content matches or whether the domains is just hunted by another domaineers.

so ya, do contact him and good luck :)

wait for the site to be up. don't wait too long or he's going to have traffic on his site which would reduce the interest in your domain. if the site is fresh, your DN name and extension is better, he could roll the content over before he has to worry about redirecting traffic and/or repositioning. if you wait for the content, you know which way he's going, by the professionalism of the site you can easily judge how serious the guy is about his business, product, price levels, etc.
it's a question of timing in this case.

I believe it's better to wait

From their web design you can understand the price level of the offer you can make and estimate how serious your buyer will be

find out indirectly what does he do? Does he have other domains? Is he the owner
of a real company?
