Not sure if this should go in this forum or not, but it seems fitting to me.

I was just thinking about this and decided to post a thread... Who do you think the best appraisers on NP are, and why? The people that are most accurate, helpful, and trustworthy. I know there is no way to get it right all the time, but who gets it right most of the time?
When you're looking for an appraisal, you see _______'s name and know the value they put on it is closest.

I'd say there are several good appraisers, but Spade is the name that first comes to my mind. So I would nominate him for the crown of "Best NamePros appraiser 2007" ;)

I would mention Porte as he is a most willing guy, that gives honest opinions based on his (good) method.

appraising isnt an exact science, what works for one group of domains might not work for something else. People often have areas they specialise in as well, so probably not fair to say one person is better than another.

Although I would say that I trust Spade's Appraisals.

I agree with that. But, being a new member here, and seeing all the appraisal threads made me curious as to who the most trusted are.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree.
I'm fairly good at appraising LLLL.com names as I've been buying and selling for a long time.

I also nominate Spade as he is very experienced in the domain field.

Spade and Porte are on my list as well, as is sashas. I think Reality Hurts can be harsh but accurate (on the pessimistic side) - his name says it all. :)

It all depends. Spade is a pretty good astute all rounder. However, for the most part appraising domains is just like the antiques market. What may be considered a piece of tat by one dealer, to another dealer he can see hidden value in it based on his or her knowledge in that specialised area.

Some names just like old china may appear very good on the surface, but probe deeper and you see a hairline crack across the surface, or a fatal flaw, letting the name down entirely.

One person may be excellent at appraising .com's but not know a thing about the latest .co.uk market or the .mobi market or whatever.

All appraisals should therefore be taken with a grain of salt, as any name as we know, is only worth what an end user at the end of the day, is actually prepared to pay for it. That is the domain names worth at the present moment.

All things too, as in any market swings in roundabouts. What is fashionable one day, may be worthless the next. Take for example the antique furniture market in the UK, been on it's knees for several years, with extremely low prices compared to the 1980's and early 1990's. But who is to know when the market may pick up again, when these pieces of furniture become the latest must have item and prices start escalating.

I second that. Porte always gives good and readily available advice. Sometimes hes the only one that even appraises my names.

HTML and Porte are excellent. I also notice RWAC has been handing out some excellent advice recently.

Thanks to everyone for posting your opinions. I agree with RWAC's comment that appraisals should be taken with a grain of salt, in most cases. But, most of the people mentioned here offer advice as well as a ballpark value, which is very helpful. Giving someone ideas of what their domain could be worth if this or that is done, or if they developed it in this way or that way, that's good info.
Also, it's good to know the people that can be trusted, can you imagine a domain 'newbie' coming to a forum, and posting some domains for appraisal without having clue what they are worth. Someone with some social engineering skills could low-ball an appraisal then PM an offer. I don't know if that happens or not, but it seems possible. Especially to someone that's new and just spent a lot of money, hearing their domains are worthless, they'd probably be willing to accept anything that got their money back.

Spade and Porte seem to have a lot of knowledge and experience appraising domains.

For sure, every one does mistakes when appraisaing domains, we try to help each other in the atmosphere of friendly community. So I can't really comment that we have official appraisers here, and we can't say someone is perfect for appraisaing all kind of tlds or all kind of domains.

Let us say that we work together to give close to accurate info. So If I did a mistake.. Another fellow comes and correct it. This way, the domain owner should only take the majority of opinions.

Like if 5 out of 6 say a domain is worth regcost, it's probably worth that.

I like Reality hurts appraisals and his opinions in a harsh way..but thats true, I can accept that and all members..but the OP might feel pissed off or offended. This is not meant certainly..

I also like Spade's straightforward appraisals..and sashas professional with high-yielding domain assets and stuff that i may not be able to appraise. I like this way that we communicate with each other to provide domain owners an idea of what their domain worth.. and lets not say who is the best appraiser again. :)

If I had to vote for 1 only, I would have to agree that Spade would probably be the best.

Well the point is we are all doing it to help others!!! And hopefully, as mentioned above, it all balances out. If 5-6 ppl comment on a name then chances are you can formulate a good 'average' from that.

I get my own fair share of abuse but I would like everyone to know that, as a long time domainer, I just don't wanna see you guys make the mistakes I did! :'(

For my part I hope I am friendly in my appraisals. Occasionally my humor is misconstrued so maybe we should all not take things too seriously. My appraisal methods have certainly got me alot of flak, but I will continue in order that I can stop newbies from regging 10,000 crap domains, wasting money, upsetting the wife and ensuring the kids don't eat for a month just because the household budget has gone on yogaforsheep.ws, yogaforsheep.tv and yogaforsheep.nu.

Very few people make money with domains and getting any success this late in the day is borderline impossible.

So 'tis the season of goodwill and A Merry Christmas to all you wonderful domainers!

May your portfolios blossom!

I agree 110 % with Reality Hurts. Domaining can get out of control and in the end it can have huge costs.

Good to have you here reality hurts lol

Hey Guys,

I just spotted this thread, and thanks for the kudos. I know lots of times people aren't fans of my appraisals, but I try to be as fair and reasonable as I can be, and I usually offer a little explanation as to how I came to my conclusion.

I too also want to throw in the name Porte for appraisals, he does a fine job and I think its almost always spot on.

PS: I had considered moving this thread to domain discussion, as it does not involve a domain to appraise, however I do think it does belong in this section so I have left it here for the time being.
