As the others have mentioned, definitely do a lot of reading and listening before spending too much.

The most important thing to note, is contrary to what you might think, there is NO quick magic way to make money domaining without a solid foundation of knowledge of the industry. So definitely read the forums .. also check out the blogs and podcasts. If you want a good jump start then @Michael Cyger's DNAcademy is great .. otherwise go back and listen to all the old @DomainSherpa reviews .. both are great for learning quicker.

Have good grasp of English language and spelling if buying dot coms.
The shorter the better usually.
No hyphens
No more than two words.
Stick to a budget and don’t go overboard.

The best tip I can give you is to be open to unlearning what you think you know and research research research before you buy a name (NameBio, Google Trends, top domainer blogs, etc.). Sticking to .COMs and only popular one words in other proven extensions is also a good strategy.
