Hi the only format I know that supports this sort of transparency is PNG. However, because of stupid IE's lack of support for the PNG, it is out of the picture.

You will to add a layer (in PS) with the colour which the banner will be placed on under your transparent gradient and save it like that.;)

wrong. you can get a alpha transparency addon for your sites that work :)

if you go into your gradient properties you should see your chosen color fading into another color
in this example chhosen color is black

and see attached image :)

adam,

If you read my post even more carefully you will see that i wrote "The only format I know!!"

Where exactly am I wrong?

Your gradient solution is more or less the same.

I would also like to see an example of this addon you're talking about. In his case it's a banner which generally goes on other peoples sites and you think they all have this addon?

the way i read your post you was saying you can get transparency on pngs with ie, but you can, if i mis understood what you i am sorry

the addon doesnt require the users to install anything they wont even notice that anythings happened if its installed on pages correctly

it loads a module kind of thing into the page

i kinda skim read this post how ever it my previos bit will let him make a gradient to transparency

to get png transparency working on ie you need to use this
http://webfx.eae.net/dhtml/pngbehavior/pngbehavior.html

if this is attachted properly any transparency on a png will appear transparent and not the grey blue that it shows
:)
